“Thank you to Mr. Hutzell for his eloquent letter to the editor of May 16. Parents, read it and then email your child’s teacher to find out what you can do to make school better for your child and every other student in that school. Join the PTSA and help with one activity. Volunteer at the art show, the book fair, shelving books in the library. Send in cookies — even once. Pack the Micah’s Backpacks. Believe me, your child will notice.”

“GOP’s at it again. Now they have conservative Catholics investigating Girl Scouts, saying they’re tied to Planned Parenthood. Really? These are little girls. I tell you, for a party that doesn’t want government intrusion, on your guns and your God and everything else, you sure do an awful lot of intruding on other people’s lives. Keep your nose out of people’s lives. Just worry about the economy and bigger things. Leave the little girls alone, would you please?”

“I’m reading in this morning’s paper about Waynesboro school going out on strike. Well, what they ought to do to settle this problem, they should have to work until they’re 62 years old before they can get a pension, like mostly everybody else. Then they should take and cut their pensions back, and they shouldn’t be allowed to get two jobs. ”

“I’m calling in to respond to a comment in Monday, May 14’s paper, in The Herald-Mail, about being, pit bulls being an inherently dangerous breed. I want to say that that isn’t anything but a crock, because I have had many, and I mean many, pit bulls, that’s been around my children, my grandchildren, and they are the most loving, caring dogs around. Pit bulls are only mean and dangerous if they’re, only if they train them to be mean and dangerous, because they don’t know that unless they are trained.”

“I cannot understand why they want to build the new stadium on Baltimore Street. Why don’t they use where the old hospital used to be at, that is near the stadium, and use those parking spaces and the parking deck, to be used for the ball diamond? It’d be plenty more room, and be a better location for people going in and out of town.”

“As you leave the landfill on 40 West, if you turn to go east, like back to Hagerstown, there’s a real long area that you can see traffic coming. It’s very safe. But looking to the west, traffic coming from Clear Spring, there’s a hill there, and you don’t see them until the last minute. And I think there should be better enforcement of the speed limit along there. Most people are going faster than the speed limit, and if you’re pulling out from the landfill, you take your life in your own hands.”

“I just hope the post office considers people that’s working during the daylight hours, that they don’t have it open, like, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then the people that’s working can’t get to the post office, especially if you close it on a Saturday. I think they ought to close it one day during the week, and have it open the other five days. Just my comment.”

“Let me get this right. In November, you all’s, all you Republicans around here are going to vote for an 85-year-old millionaire who just voted to cut ... food stamps for senior citizens. Are you kidding me? You’re going to vote for him because he has an R beside his names. When are people around here going to get some guts and not vote for this man? I wouldn’t vote for him now if he was the only candidate running. Come on, people, get a little guts, deep inside. He just voted to cut Meals on Wheels to your grandmother.”

“To those who indignantly insist that Social Security is not an entitlement because you paid into it for 35 to 45 years: Your contributions were never enough to cover the payments you will be receiving. President George W. Bush and Congress very recently gave you the very costly prescription drug coverage which none of you have paid for. And Medicare costs far more than beneficiaries have paid in to the program. I don’t know what Social Security should be called, but you certainly didn’t earn or pay for all that you are receiving.”

“Why all the fuss over baseball? It’s retrogression. It’s primitive. Watching baseball is the opposite of living intelligently, which we constantly talk about our school system succeed in doing. Are we expected to mix dumb things with smart things in life? Good way to go crazy.”

“If I wanted to go see a baseball game, I would rather drive to Winchester and park in a parking lot right around the stadium, than to park in a parking lot in downtown Hagerstown, and have to walk to a stadium. Trust me, I am not going to be parking in an off-the-lot parking lot in downtown Hagerstown, just to go to a stadium three or four blocks away. It’s not worth it, not downtown Hagerstown. The stadium should not be downtown Hagerstown. Simple, easy. Get with it, Mayor. Stop shoving this down our throats.”
