“A roundabout at HCC is absolutely ridiculous. What is wrong with another entrance to the college, from Yale Drive? The lengthening of that road has already been approved. So what are we waiting for, money? Take the money from the roundabout and the senior citizens center, and you will have enough money to put the Yale Drive entrance to the college.”

“Since Washington County government will not shut down the Washington County airport, we, the residents of the Garden Spot development at the edge of Maugansville, are having the FAA declare Garden Spot area a no-fly zone, such as Camp David. We’re sick and tired of the noise from the airplanes, and the air pollution.”

— Maugansville

“I’m calling about the trash, recycle bins in Maugansville, Md. I think it’s disgusting the way the people are coming in from Pennsylvania and Hagerstown and abusing our trash bins. They’re doing to them exactly what they did to the ones on Pennsylvania Avenue at the Rite Aid; leaving trash on the ground, and they’re just making it hard for the people of Maugansville, and what’s going to happen, they are going to be taken out.”

— Maugansville

“I totally agree with Tom Wilhelm’s letter, ‘Senior citizens center not needed.’ I am 88, and find plenty to do to occupy my time. I will never use a senior center. Who are these people who expect to be entertained on the taxpayers’ money?”

“I’d like to know how the citizens of Washington County feel about this. Elementary school kids get on the bus at about quarter after 7 in the morning to go to school — or actually, have to be at school about quarter after 7, 7:30. Kindergartners don’t eat lunch until 10 of 1, and the children get out of school at 2:15. I’d like to know how the people of Washington County feel about this. I’m very disappointed to know that my kindergartner is not eating lunch until 10 of 1.”

“I’d just like to comment on the Wesel Boulevard and Massey, Halfway area construction. Everything has gone very fine for the County Roads or whoever’s doing that. Just wanted to say congratulations to the guys out there working hard. They’ve done a great job. The whole time they’ve been there, it’s been very timely event for them. It’s just been great. I’m happy for them, and just want to congratulate them on a great job.”

— Washington County

“Headline, ‘Officials: Money scarce for road projects’. But you can put sparkle in a couple blocks of South Potomac Street, you can tear down the library and rebuild it, you can tear down the hospital and Pangborn Hall, and they’ll be rebuilt. You’re going to spend $8 million to build a senior center that nobody will go to because of the traffic in the area, and older people can’t handle it, and yet.”

— Washington County

“The Herald-Mail is doing a great job on checking up on the fire and rescue association. It’s long past due. It’s time they start checking up on some of these ambulance companies, on the rates that they charge to haul people to the hospital. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

— Hagerstown

“A Mail Caller says, ‘Why on earth would you want to add a roundabout, where people don’t stop, they yield? It won’t work.’ You are worried because people aren’t required to stop at a roundabout? In this area, people don’t stop at traffic lights, so how would a roundabout change anything?”

— Hagerstown

“‘Senior center not needed in Washington County,’ by Tom Wilhelm, was exactly right. I am 82 years old and have lived in Washington County my entire life, and never had a need for a ‘senior center.’ Our county has a wide range of things to do and places to go, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime, from motorcycle races to a first-class symphony orchestra. Why expect to have a ‘center?’ Go find your own entertainment.”

“I’m calling in reference to Herald-Mail, Oct. 8, Saturday. Congratulations to Jeff Myers for the letter on the ‘something must be done about our empty buildings,’ which is so true. I don’t see why the senior center has to be built out at the college. They need to use one of these empty buildings, and update it. You’re not going to get that many people out at the college. Nobody wants to drive out in the area anymore. And these, all these car wrecks, I know the cops can’t say anything about it, text messaging is the problem most of the time. They’re not paying attention to where they’re going.”

— Hancock

“I have a ‘No soliciting’ sign on my front door, and that’s for a very good reason, but these churches still keep putting all their paperwork in my door, and I do not know how to stop this. I have repeatedly asked them and called them to please stop it. Nobody listens to me. It is illegal to do that. I don’t know how to get this word out to people, so maybe through your Mail Call, people will understand, and stop that.”

— Hagerstown

“Thank God The Herald-Mail keeps reporting this, but each day it seems like it gets worse, with all this gaming money and all. Shame on all the past county commissioners, and all the county employees and the fire companies and everyone else involved.”

— Washington County

“I read the letter to the editor from Kristin Aleshire on Sunday, Oct. 9, and have concluded it’s no wonder the robocall mess tried to get rid of Kristin Aleshire. He spilled the beans and more, about the secret organizations that run our county and probably the city. Thank you, Herald-Mail, for doing that, plus the firemen’s scandal. If a booklet about that could be sent out or available, maybe the association to get it published for you, so people can keep it on hand and track the numbers themselves. Hope the guy gets, the writer, Arnold, gets a Pulitzer for it.”

— Washington County

“Thank you, Kristin Aleshire, for your excellent letter to the editor, Sunday, Oct. 9. While the good-old boys and their mouthpieces fleece the taxpayers, our spineless local tea party remains silent.”

— Williamsport

“I am completely sick and tired of this ridiculous bickering between Democrats and Republicans. It makes me sick. I don’t know why you guys don’t grow up. It makes me not even want to vote anymore, because all you’re concerned about is your own parties, and not what’s best for the country.”

— Keedysville

“To the caller who was praising President Obama for knocking off another terrorist: Let me tell you to don’t pound your chest too hard. Remember, this is about the only thing that he’s done right since he’s been in office. And as far as all this spending to Iraq, what about the stimulus that him and Nancy Pelosi ran through that hasn’t worked and hasn’t proven any jobs?”
