Thumbs up to the local chapter of ABATE of Maryland, which on Sunday delivered donations to the ACTS 9 clothing and food bank in Hagerstown for the 20th year. The motorcyle group went to San Mar Children’s Home later in the day to hold a Christmas party for girls at the Boonsboro-area shelter-care program.
Thumbs up to North Hagerstown sophomore Kyle Denning, who arranged to return a class ring from 1979 to its rightful owner after discovering it in the jacket pocket of a suit he purchased from a consignment store. Family friend Kelley Seiler, who assisted in returning the ring to fellow graduate Doug Stone, called Kyle an “honest kid (who) understood that this ring meant something to someone.”
Thumbs up to K. Marilyn Smith of Waynesboro, Pa., who was presented this week with the Community Coalition’s first lifetime achievement award. The coalition, which is dedicated to fighting drug and alcohol problems, said Smith, 76, deserved the recognition because of her countless hours of work for young people.
Thumbs down to a Philadelphia-area woman who admitted to stealing more than $300,000 from a sick neighbor to support her husband’s businesses, where she was the bookkeeper. The fraud was discovered after the woman stopped paying nursing home bills for her 67-year-old neighbor, who was admitted to the home because of complications from brain cancer.
