Thumbs up to the off-duty state police flight paramedic and two other motorists who pulled a driver from a burning car Tuesday morning on Interstate 70 west of Big Pool. The man died in the crash, but the efforts of these passers-by were heroic.
Thumbs up to the Franklin County (Pa.) District Attorney’s office, which hosted retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Dave Grossman for a seminar Monday about violence in schools. The event at Waynesboro Area Senior High School was attended by several hundred police officers, sheriff’s deputies, school board members, principals, superintendents and fire officials.
Thumbs up to Albert Lexie, a shoeshine man at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh who has given the hospital more than $200,000 in tips he has collected over the last 30 years. Lexie, who has been shining shoes since the 1950s, donated the money to the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund, which helps parents who can’t afford to pay their sick children’s medical costs.
