Thumbs up to the members of Antietam Chapter 312 of the Korean War Veterans Association, whose tireless efforts to build a monument to honor men and women who served in the conflict took a major step forward this week with a groundbreaking ceremony on Mealey Parkway in Hagerstown. The memorial, which started as a dream in October 2010, is expected to be completed about a year from now.
Thumbs down to those who dumped 360 tons — that’s 720,000 pounds — of garbage that was collected by more than 9,000 volunteers during West Virginia’s annual spring cleanup. Included in the waste collection during April were 1,830 tires and 432 appliances. Six hundred acres of parks, 200 miles of roads and more than 100 miles of streams and trails were cleared of trash.
