Thumbs up to Jessica Swarner of Hagerstown, whose leadership and positive attitude have made a positive impression on her school, St. Maria Goretti. After attending a Hugh O’Brian Youth leadership seminar last year, she started the Positivity Club, which has hosted events like Post-it Notes Day and High Five in the Hallway.
Thumbs up to organizers, performers and supporters of Blues Fest, one of Hagerstown’s showcase events that was held last weekend. It is a solid, well-run event that makes the city and region proud.
Thumbs up to local baseball stars Nathan Minnich of Waynesboro, Pa., and Josh Conway of Smithsburg, who were selected in the Major League Baseball draft this week. Congratulations and good luck to you both as you begin this new journey.
Thumbs down to the Waynesboro (Pa.) Area School Board and its teachers union for their inability to get a deal done on a new contract. The teachers have been working under terms of a contract that expired nearly two years ago. No matter the issues, every other school system in the Tri-State area has managed to find some kind of terms that both sides could accept. This kind of disagreement is distracting and doesn’t add to the educational process.
