That aviation plays an important role in the Valley shouldn’t come as a surprise to many residents. Its use in everything from farming, recreation, law enforcement as well as military exercises is visible and audible on a daily basis.

Likewise, for every aircraft spotted in the sky there are countless support personnel in place on the ground, whether they are providing maintenance, logistics or infrastructure services.

In that respect, Aviation Day in the Valley at the Imperial County airport provides a perfect opportunity to remind the public of the economic impact aviation has had on the area. With the county airport as a backdrop, the event is sure to stoke the imaginations of both kids and adults alike.

With this year’s return of the Parade of Planes after a three-year hiatus, the importance of math and science in the world of aviation also was given added recognition. Not only did schoolchildren throughout the Valley get the opportunity Wednesday to view the aircraft during flyovers, but they were also provided with classroom materials that aimed to educate students about aviation and flying.

The chance to see military and general aviation aircraft up close at Saturday’s event should also further bolster an interest in flight. While youngsters may not realize it at the time, viewing such aircraft up close is like a hands-on lesson in aerodynamics and structural engineering.

A limited number of free rides are also available for those 8 to 17 years old, so get there early Saturday to register.

As any aviator is likely to tell you, the desire to one day roam the skies was almost certainly stoked during their formative years. And in comparison to other human desires, the ability to take flight is not easily dismissed, nor should be. For many the world over, flight is synonymous with freedom.

While the career paths and recreational activity that aviation has to offer might not be all that visible or seem attainable to some Valley residents, they will always be in demand. Aviation Day is proof of that.
