San Ciriaco hurricane in August 1899 was longest lasting storm on record, 33 days. It plowed over Puerto Rico and Hispaniola and then squeezed between the Bahamas and South Florida, struck North Carolina and bounced back into the Atlantic, retaining Category 1 status. By the time it died on Sept. 4 of that year, it had snaked northeast almost to Ireland and covered about 8,600 miles.
