1920s: The flapper cocktail

Women didn't drink in public until early in the 20th century. So Finamore celebrates those flappers with in this spirited combination. "She is a symbol of independence," says Finamore. "A woman who is out there in much less restrictive clothing. That kind of epitomizes what was happening."

1 ounce rum

1 ounce French vermouth

1/4 teaspoon sugar

1 dash Angostura bitters

Maraschino cherry and orange slice, for garnish

Pour the rum and vermouth into a cocktail glass. Sweeten to taste with sugar. Add a dash of Angostura bitters. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a slice of orange.

Makes 1 cocktail.
