An Aberdeen trio won this weekend's 24th annual Wolves on the Water Walleye Tournament on the Missouri River near Glenham.

Kent Wirebaugh, Shannon Yeske and Scott Podoll earned the first-place prize of $2,500 by catching eight fish that weighed a total of 22.27 pounds. Their biggest walleye was a 6.08 pounder. NSU said Wirebaugh and Yeske are former golfers for the Wolves.

There were 129 teams, and about 500 were served ribeye steak dinners the night before the tourney and there were more than $50,000 in cash and prizes given out including 20 guns. The team of Brent Kemnitz, Michael Kemnitz and Rod Kluess caught the biggest walleye (6.43) and the team of Jason LaFave, Brandon Binder and Oliver LaFave caught the biggest non-walleye (a 24.25-pound carp).

Jim White of Huron was recognized as the first annual recipient of the Dennis “Doc” Gross Contributor Award. White and other volunteers helped bring the tournament back after it was discontinued in the late 1990s.

The tourney, which serves as a fundraiser for NSU athletics, will return next year to New Evarts Lodge and Grill in Walth's Bay near Glenham on May 31-June 1.
