BEMIDJI, Minn. - Northern State athletes produced good results in several events Friday at the first day of the NSIC Indoor Track Championships.

In the team points, the Wolves are in third place on the men's side with 35 points, trailing Moorhead and Augustana. Northern is tied for sixth in the women's division. Augustana leads that division.

Northern coach Jim Fuller was especially pleased with the efforts of the jumpers, as Calvin McGruder placed first in the high jump and second in the long jump.

A Northern State men's athlete has now won the last four NSIC high jump titles. Andrew Rose won both the indoor and outdoor high jump titles last season and also claimed the 2009 outdoor crown. McGruder won this year's conference high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches. Rose placed eighth with a mark of 6-2 .

Sophomore hurdler Luke Hauert beat his own NSIC indoor conference meet record in the 60-meter hurdles. Hauert had the best time in the preliminaries with a time of :08.10 seconds, which was sixth tenths of a second better than the record he set last year. He shared the record with Laquone Robinson of Minnesota State-Moorhead, who had a time of :08.33 seconds on Friday.

Fuller also noted both distance medley teams did well, as the team was made up all freshmen on the girls' side. Tanya Vassar had a good day for the Wolves, Fuller said, adding several athletes had good days Friday.

“She has been on lately and really looked good,” said Fuller of Vassar. “The long jump guys really did well, when you have to go 22 feet to place. I was pleased with the way we jumped.”

The meet concludes today as action gets underway at 10 a.m.
