Making headlines

Sometimes, so much happens in sports in such a short time, you are left with your head spinning after it is all over.

There is never enough bodies, time and space to cover it all, so you do the best you can. And around the American News sports department, it has been a crazy few days and weeks. Some of the headlines:

  • Chad Becker of Aberdeen wins the WISSOTA Lake Model national championship.

  • Terry Dosch of Aberdeen Roncalli became the 14th high school football coach in the history of South Dakota to win 200 career games.
  • We publish the history of Northern State football project.
  • We help with the 24 hour Gypsy Day project. I went straight from eight hours of state soccer coverage on Friday at Swisher Field in Aberdeen until midnight to find myself walking in the Zoo at 12:26 a.m. Saturday as part of the project to report on the Gypsy Days goings-on. I was only there for a couple of minutes — I felt very old very fast.

On and on it went — state AA and A boys’ golf was Oct. 1-2; state soccer Oct. 4-5; and state girls’ tennis Oct. 4-6 — and goes as the state cross country meet and football playoffs are bearing down on us fast as well as volleyball districts.

Auto racing

Two Brown County Speedway regulars ended up at the top of the WISSOTA Lake Model national points standings.

Chad Becker won the prestigious national title by earning 1,624 points this season. David McDonald of Huron was second with 1,623.

 One point, wow!

In the Modified division, Kent Arment of Aberdeen was fourth with 1,627 points. Dave Cain of Corcoran, Minn., was the champion with 1,675 points.

Central girls’ soccer

My American News teammate Deb Smith recently talked to the coach of the two-time state champion Aberdeen Central soccer team, Merle Aske, about his assistants. Here is her report:

Very much like successful teams, coaching staffs must have chemistry.

The Aberdeen Central girls’ soccer coaches are a mixture of personalities and knowledge and Aberdeen head coach Merle Aske appreciates his assistants, John Borchard, Summer (Swan) Jark and Erin Deibert.
