St. Cloud State senior quarterback Phillip Klaphake was the hero the Huskies. He took the final snap with three seconds remaining, scrambled left, reversed field when Duluth lost backside containment and finally slung a touchdown strike to Michael Walker that erased the Bulldogs’ 49-45 lead at the final gun.

Klaphake threw for a school record 466 passing yards, tied a single game record for touchdown passes with five, the most important an eight yard strike to Walker, and rushed for another touchdown.

He broke the old passing mark of 377 yards set by Jon Quesnel on Oct. 14, 2006 against Augustana College. He is the fourth Husky to throw five touchdown passes in a game and the first since Dan Kaczor threw five in 2004 against Western Washington.

Klaphake’s touchdown passes were to five different players as the Huskies rolled up 642 yards of total offense, third most in school history.

Walker scored two touchdowns and for the third time this season Walker rushed for over 100 yards. He finished the game with 12 carries for 107 yards and one touchdown and caught that game-winning pass for his only reception of the game.

Saturday’s bout was the highest-scoring game ever played between the NSIC North Division foes in a rivalry dating back to 1933 — and it was affirmation that no lead, and certainly no opponent, can ever be taken lightly. It was on this same field exactly 11 months ago to the day that SCSU slowed UMD’s roll toward a fourth straight NSIC crown with a stunning 35-7 defeat. The Huskies took a different route to the same outcome this time. They trailed throughout, not going ahead until 13 minutes had expired in the final quarter. Duluth senior quarterback Chase Vogler quickly regained the lead only to have it surrendered again in the last 1:16.

Winona State 45

Upper Iowa 42

FAYETTE, Iowa — Winona State scored twice in the fourth quarter to come from behind and post a victory over Upper Iowa.

Trailing 35-31, the Warriors scored on a 20 yard run by Rayon Simmons with 8:31 remaining in the game to retake the lead. Three plays later Winona safety Jared Mitchell intercepted a Cole Jaeschke pass and returned it 52 yards for a score and a 45-35 Warrior advantage. Upper Iowa would not go away, scoring with 5:42 to pull within three, 45-42. After Winona State was forced to punt on their next possession, Upper Iowa marched down the field but was stopped on a fourth down play from the WSU 44 yardline with just over a minute remaining, cementing the Winona State victory.

Simmons rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns on the game, making him the first person in Winona State history to gain 4,000 yards on the ground. The senior, who set Winona’s all-time rushing record last week, now has 4,184 yards in his career. He also has 3,931 yards in NSIC play, just 284 yards from becoming the NSIC’s all-time leading rusher. Simmons also has 51 touchdowns in his career, just two behind the WSU career record.

Wayne State College 31

Augustana College 27

WAYNE, Neb. — Senior running back Nick Pulscher ran for 145 yards and one score while senior wide receiver Kevin Paulsen added six catches for 122 yards and two scores to lead Wayne State College in a homecoming win over Augustana College.

The Vikings scored with 2:13 to play in the game as Josh Hanson threw his third touchdown pass of the game to Ben Parsley, this time from six yards out, trimming the lead to 31-27 after the extra point kick by Drew Behrens hit the right upright.
