In the second inning, All-Star catcher Matt Wieters was struck in his right shoulder joint by a foul tip.
Wieters said it hurt when it happened, but he stayed in the game. As the night progressed, he began to feel more discomfort.
“It was in a tough spot in the shoulder,” Wieters said. “It got a little tired as the game went on. I’m pretty sure it is just a bruise.”
Orioles manager Buck Showalter decided to remove Wieters for precautionary reasons in the seventh. Preliminary X-rays were negative – and the Orioles could breathe a little bit.
Wieters said he expects with some time off Thursday, he should be fine to play Friday’s opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.
“Get a little rest, it’s just something that got sore as the game went on,” he said. “I’m sure a good night’s sleep on it and a good day off and we’ll be good to go.”
Wieters, who was 2-for-18 on this road trip and is now batting .238 on the season, has played in 111 of the Orioles’ 124 games this season; that’s a whole lot for a catcher.
