Martinsburg’s loss became Clear Spring’s gain.
Corey McClure moved to Clear Spring when he was 4 years old and started playing soccer when he was a first-grader.
The years go by quickly and McClure will soon wrap up his days as a senior at Clear Spring and head on to bigger things.
His individual numbers weren’t gaudy, but he was the main force when it came to delivering key goals. He finished with a team-leading 15 goals this past season and also had a pair of assists.
When all was said and done, Clear Spring had a 13-3-1 record, one of its best ever, and a county championship.
McClure is The Herald-Mail’s 2012 Washington County Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
The soft-spoken redhead said he wasn’t worried about any individual honors.
“I wanted this year to be better than last year,” McClure said. “We all got along, and we were so close to making it to states.”
It was in the Washington County Public Schools championship game on Oct. 13 that McClure stood out, scoring both goals for the Blazers in their 2-0 win over North Hagerstown. He also scored the only goal in regulation in the county semifinals against Williamsport, a 1-1 tie that went to penalty kicks with Clear Spring winning.
Coach Lynn Mills has seen the progression of McClure.
“(McClure) was a good player, but I think last year was a little mediocre,” Mills said. “Maybe he was playing out of position some, but we made some adjustments and he exploded this year.”
At forward, McClure relied on a pair of midfielders feeding him the ball in Bradly Mills and Jonathan Henesy.
“I couldn’t have scored without those two,” McClure said. “They fed me the ball perfectly.”
As for the future, McClure said he might play soccer if he attends college and mentioned Frostburg State as a possibility. He also is interested in the Air National Guard.
McClure also plays tennis for the Blazers.
There was tough competition for the award, including the likes of St. Maria Goretti’s Kevin Proctor and Williamsport’s Owen Marx.
Joing McClure on the all-county first team are:
Levi Bucher, Clear Spring
The senior goalkeeper allowed only 12 goals for a 0.77 goals against average, just behind North’s Max Ober. Bucher recorded 10 shutouts, facing 134 shots.
Ryan Byard, North Hagerstown
The senior midfielder was the Hubs’ leading scorer with 11 goals and two assists for 24 points.
Adler Garrett, Smithsburg
The senior forward had 11 goals and two assists for a team-leading 24 points for the Leopards.
Tiago DeSouza, Williamsport
The junior midfielder put in six goals to go along with six assists for an 18-point season for the Wildcats.
C.J. Elwood, Clear Spring
The senior defender kept opponents at bay and still managed to score four goals with two assists for 10 points.
Drew Katrina, St. Maria Goretti
The junior goalkeeper had a 1.62 goals against average against stellar opposition for the Gaels and recorded six shutouts.
Rusty Kopp, Boonsboro
The senior sweeper became the cornerstone of the Boonsboro defense. He also scored a goal.
Owen Marx, Williamsport
The junior forward led the team with 28 points which came on 12 goals, nearly half of the team total, and four assists.
Bradly Mills, Clear Spring
The junior midfielder scored two goals and delivered a team-high 10 assists.
Bryce Nigh, Heritage Academy
The senior midfielder had 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points for the Eagles.
Max Ober, North Hagerstown
The senior goalkeeper led the county in goals against average (0.69) and posted eight shutouts.
Kevin Proctor, St. Maria Goretti
The senior midfielder had a county-high 40 points on 16 goals and eight assists.
Garrett Singer, North Hagerstown
The senior defender was a big reason why the Hubs allowed only 13 goals. He had an 80 percent passing completion percentage.
Brayden Tiner, South Hagerstown
The junior midfielder had four goals and six assists and played his position as well as anyone through a losing year.
