BOONSBORO —After watching his team commit 28 turnovers, shoot 30 percent from the floor and score just 15 second-half points on Friday night, it’s understandable that Boonsboro girls basketball coach Sam Connelly felt like there was plenty for his players to work on in practice.
But since the Warriors escaped with a 44-34 MVAL Antietam victory over North Hagerstown, it made the performance a much easier pill to swallow.
“I (am) concerned with our lack of focus and lack of energy,” said Connelly. “I thought North played harder than us. The game started out a little slow and we just fell into playing that slow. We were never able to play our style tonight.”
But the Hubs (2-5, 2-3) struggled even more — turning the ball over 31 times, and shooting just 20 percent from the floor — and were never able to take advantage of the opportunities handed to them.
North’s inability to put the ball in the basket “has been a recurring problem for us,” according to Hubs coach Cyndi Miller. Although she agreed that her team “put out a lot of effort,” there were few results.
Boonsboro led 5-4 with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter, until Claudia Jenkins’ 3-pointer sparked a 9-0 run to end the period and give the Warriors (6-3, 4-1) a 10-point advantage.
The Hubs rallied in the second period, hitting nine of 10 free throws to close the gap to 17-13, but Kristyn Davis kept Boonsboro afloat with three 3-pointers, as the Warriors finished the first half with a 12-6 run to maintain a 10-point edge entering the intermission.
A Kayla Peterson jumper and a free throw from Crystal McLeod closed North’s deficit to 31-22 with 5:11 left in the third, but three points by Shannon O’Brien propelled a 6-0 Boonsboro run to hand the Warriors a 37-22 lead entering the final eight minutes.
Despite holding Boonsboro to just seven fourth-quarter points, the Hubs were unable to mount a significant charge, hitting just four of 19 field goals and three of nine free throws in the period.
McLeod’s 12 points led the Hubs, while Davis paced Boonsboro with 13 points.
