HAGERSTOWN —Star senior Iman Scott has played the leading role for North Hagerstown’s girls basketball team for most of this season. But on Tuesday night, her supporting cast got its time in the spotlight.
Kayla Peterson scored 10 points, while Crystal McLeod and Autumn Fisher each added four in North’s 18-0 second-quarter run to put the Hubs in total control for a 56-37 victory over visiting Smithsburg in an MVAL Antietam contest.
The run turned a 16-12 Leopards lead into a 30-16 Hubs advantage as North (9-8, 7-5) dominated the second period, making 10 of 15 shots while holding Smithsburg (8-7, 7-5) to 2-for-8 shooting. The Hubs outrebounded the Leopards 10-4 in the period and committed just three turnovers to Smithsburg’s seven.
“I’ve been waiting for it all season,” North coach Cyndi Benjamin said. “For some reason, it finally clicked. They moved the basketball, got open looks ... and took the pressure off Iman.”
The Hubs made six jumpers for 12 of the 18 points in the decisive run. Peterson made four of them, all from about 15 feet on the baseline.
“With Kayla, it’s just her confidence,” Benjamin said. “They left her open and she kept shooting.”
“I don’t think we played the kind of defense we needed to play tonight, and give North credit,” Smithsburg coach Katy Barnhart said. “Everybody stepped up and hit shots.”
A 7-0 run over a three-minute period of the third quarter gave North a 44-24 lead, and that was enough for Barnhart to empty her bench and play the reserves the rest of the way. They actually outscored the Hubs 13-12 from that point.
“They definitely ran our offense well,” Barnhart said. “They executed and played really hard. I’m very happy with the fourth quarter.”
McLeod finished with 14 points, five assists and three blocks while playing tough man-to-man defense for the Hubs.
“I think she’s learned how to harness all of her energy,” Benjamin said. “Instead of it all exploding at once, she’s learning how to use it efficiently.”
Scott had 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in a solid all-around game for North. Peterson finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, and Samiyah Williams added five assists.
Kinsey Shifflett came off the bench to lead Smithsburg with 10 points, while Elise Owens hit three 3-pointers for nine points. Elyse Koterwas and Krystal Holl had six rebounds each.
