North Hagerstown point guard Crystal McLeod said she’s spent a lot of time lately trying to improve her foul shooting.
The hard work paid off for McLeod and the Hubs on Friday night as she made 11 of her 14 free throws and finished with a game-high 19 points to lead North to a 43-36 MVAL Antietam victory over Clear Spring.
“I was working hard in practice on my foul shots,” said McLeod, who ranks second among Washington County girls in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game. “They were certainly dropping tonight.”
North (3-5, 3-3) and Clear Spring (4-7, 0-6) were locked in a 34-34 tie after three quarters.
The Hubs then outscored the Blazers 9-2 in the fourth quarter to come away with the victory. McLeod scored seven of the Hubs’ nine points in the final period.
“We had rough moments at times,” said McLeod, who also had five steals and three assists. “But when we wanted to, we played our best. I had to push it to get my team a win.”
Kayla Peterson came through with a triple-double for the Hubs with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 11 steals.
“Any win is a good win,” North coach Cyndi Miller said. “We have got to work on our shooting. Our shots weren’t going in well at all. Clear Spring was really hustling. Defensively, we played pretty well in spurts. But we can play more consistently.”
Kristen Mellott finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Samantha Staley had 15 rebounds and nine points for the Blazers.
“We showed heart from beginning to end,” Clear Spring coach Bill McIntire said. “We have just got to correct our 29 turnovers.”
We missed a lot of layups. Their quick point guard forced us into a lot of bad decisions.”
