J.R. Lowery has gotten plenty of recognition in Washington County already.

On Wednesday, he got a little love from around the state of Maryland.

The Boonsboro senior was a second-team selection on the Maryland Small School All-State Football Team, as chosen by a panel of sports writers across the state.

Lowery, who was The Herald-Mail’s Washington County Defensive Player of the Year, led the county with 135 tackles in 2011, including 24 tackles for loss and nine sacks.

He was an MVAL Antietam first-team pick as both an offensive tackle and a defensive lineman. He was the vocal leader of the Warriors, helping their turnaround from 2-8 in 2010 to 9-2 in 2011.

Twenty-seven Washington County players received honorable mention.

Small School Honorable Mention (1A, 2A and small private schools)

Boonsboro: Britton Beard, Justin Jardeleza, Zach Poffenberger, J.T. Rice, Aaron Turner.

Clear Spring: Ryan Aaron, Sam Elwood, Tylar Habel, Adam Mellott.

Hancock: Garrett Wiles.

Smithsburg: Robby Hogue.

Williamsport: Nate Downs, Alex Fridley, Zach Nalley, Brandon Starliper, Tyler Wise.

Big School Honorable Mention (3A, 4A and large private schools)

North Hagerstown: Phillip Butler, Dylan Dopson, Sergio Galvan, Mark Grunberg, Daved Paddack, J.T. Root.

South Hagerstown: Malik Barnwell, C.J. Davis, Brandon Hess, Aaron Rowland, Isiaha Smith.

All-State Football teams

FREDERICK, Md. — The Big and Small School All-State Teams are selected through a vote by media members and compiled by Sheldon Shealer of ESPNHS. More than a dozen high school football reporters contributed to the voting this year, which marks the 20th annual All-State selections.

The Consensus All-State team, along with Players and Coaches of the Year will be announced Thursday morning.
