Clear Spring freshman Michael Riley has ice water running through his veins.
Riley led Clear Spring with 19 points — including 13 in the fourth quarter — as the Blazers came from behind to down Berkeley Springs 65-52 on Monday night.
Clear Spring trailed 43-42 heading into the fourth quarter when Riley scored 10 straight points with four straight buckets to push the Blazers (6-11) to the victory.
“When I hit the first 3-pointer, it felt real good,” said Riley. “Spencer and Collin (Schultz) fed me a couple good looks. I felt like it was going in every time I released the ball.”
“Michael was just tremendous in the second half. That was the key for us,” said Clear Spring coach Ryan Grabill.
That confidence trickled down to the rest of the Blazers, who hit 15 of 24 shots in the second half. Clear Spring’s defense fed its offense with 10 second-half turnovers, including three steals from C.J. Elwood.
“C.J. set the tone defensively with great ball pressure, and everyone else followed suit,” said Grabill. “We got stops, took care of the ball, and hit high-percentage shots.”
It was a vastly different in the first half.
Berkeley Springs (4-9) set the early tone. The Indians opened on a six-point run and went 12-for-17 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free throw line to stake a 35-27 halftime lead. Michael Kearney led Berkeley Springs with 11 points — all in the first half.
Meanwhile, Clear Spring couldn’t find a rhythm, committing 10 first-half fouls and only shooting 9-for-25 from the field.
However, the Blazers came out firing in the third quarter.
Clear Spring started the third on a 6-1 run and outscored Berkeley Springs 15-8 in the period. Elwood went 6-for-6 from the line and Riley hit a 3-pointer to get the Blazers within one point heading into the final quarter.
Ryan Aaron scored 12 points for the Blazers, while Elwood and Collin Schultz had eight points each. Jacob Brant had four points and seven rebounds for Clear Spring.
Zach Wise and Kyle Appel each scored 10 points for Berkeley Springs.
