Boonsboro’s boys basketball team notched its fifth win of the season on Wednesday with a 57-28 MVAL Antietam victory over Catoctin.
The Warriors (5-4, 3-1) set the tone from the tip with a 9-2 run, en route to a 13-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Dylan Coulter and Scott Bennett each drained four points and Chad Cowden added three in the quarter to pace Boonsboro.
Cowden and Bennett began to fire at will in the second quarter. Cowden scored six points in Boonsboro’s eight-point run that started the period. It caused Catoctin to call time, but it didn’t help as the Warriors came out of the break to mount a 15-2 run to take a 28-6 halftime lead.
Bennett netted nine of his game-high 19 points in the period.
“We came out and dictated the tempo tonight,” said Boonsboro coach Skip Chambers. “We’re working. We’re putting in the effort to get better each and every game. Tonight was a good effort from us.”
Catoctin (0-6, 0-4) couldn’t find a rhythm in the first half, shooting 3-for-20 from the floor and giving the ball away 15 times, including three steals from Bennett.
“We talk about taking care of the basketball and eliminating unforced errors,” said Catoctin coach Mark Wiles. “We continued to turn the ball over against their pressure and we couldn’t find shots. We have to hit our shots. If you can’t score, you can’t win.”
The Cougars found some rhythm in the second half, scoring 22 points — including eight from Kendall Smith — but they still couldn’t find the handle the ball. Catoctin turned the ball over 16 more times, giving Boonsboro plenty of opportunities to score.
Cowden added seven points to finish with 16, while Coulter finished with nine. Nathaniel Saunders added five points for Boonsboro. Cowden finished with 12 rebounds, while Bennett collected five steals.
“Do we want to compete? Yes we do,” said Chambers. “I’ll never fault our effort. We keep getting better.”
Jacob Tokar also scored eight points for Catoctin.
