Heritage Academy opened its boys basketball season on the right foot on Tuesday with a 58-41 victory over Highland View Academy.

The Eagles (1-0) jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, playing stifling defense to facilitate their offense. Heritage forced 13 turnovers from Highland View (1-2) in the first half — including eight steals — and only allowed the Tartans to make 7 of 20 shots from the field.

Meanwhile, the duo of Alex Cosner and Chris Harrell paced the Eagles’ offense with 21 combined points en route to a 31-16 Heritage lead at the break. Cosner also added nine rebounds and three steals in the first half.

“(Highland View) started the game playing a zone defense, which gave us chances to make plays,” said Heritage coach Mike Kidd. “Then they switched to man so we had to make some adjustments. We got into a little bit of foul trouble too, but that’s just one thing we need to work on. We have a lot of things to clean up, but we played hard and I’m happy with the effort.”

The Tartans came alive with 11 points in the third quarter — including seven by Luis Mendoza — but they were outdone by the Eagles’ 14 points.

Ben Cosner scored six of his nine points in the period and Harrell hit two of his game-high four 3-pointers. Heritage hit 5 of 9 field goal attempts in the frame.

“We had opportunities inside in the third and we didn’t hit a few of them, but that’s just part of the cleanup process for us,” said Kidd.

From there, the Eagles were on cruise control, taking advantage of nine fourth-quarter fouls committed by the Tartans and making 7 of 11 from the charity stripe.

Alex Cosner finished with a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double and Harrell added 16 points and seven rebounds. Nate Patey added 10 points for Heritage.

“We got the first one. This was a good start,” Kidd said. “It’s November and we’ve got a lot to clean up between now and February.”

Justin Osoro had 10 points and six rebounds, and Hunter Sorenson also had 10 points for Highland View. Arthur Thomas added eight points and 10 rebounds.
