Mawdo Sallah scored a game-high 20 points and four others finished in double figures for Broadfording Christian Academy as the Lions steamrolled Hancock 87-40 in a boys basketball game Thursday night.
Broadfording set the tone in the first quarter and dictated the rest of the game. The Lions started the game on a 12-0 run — all scored by Sallah and Ben Cradduck — and scored their first 20 points in the paint.
“We wanted to press on defense and pound the ball inside on offense. We wanted to use an inside-out offense,” Burnie Clutz said.
Broadfording’s press gave Hancock fits all night as the Panthers (3-6) turned the ball over 25 times.
The Lions (14-4) afforded themselves plenty of opportunities to score with their defense and the weak-side rebounding Clutz has recently been stressing to his team.
“The last two practices, we’ve really been working on our weak-side rebounding,” Clutz said. “I think it’s a forgotten part of the game, but we’re committed to it and are better off with it.”
Offensively, Broadfording spread the ball around effectively, allowing 12 different players to score. Moni Anderson finished second on the team with 14 points, Raekwon Jackson had 11 and Isaiah Daniels and Cradduck each added 10.
The combination of Sallah and Cradduck in the low post eventually led to more outside shooting opportunities for the Lions.
“Mo is 100 percent focused every game,” Clutz said, “and Ben, I think, has the best skill set on the team. We’re trying to get (Cradduck’s) confidence back after he injured his ankle a couple weeks ago. They’re a nice tandem when they’re working well together.”
Broadfording led 47-19 at halftime and extended the lead to 72-32 entering the fourth quarter.
Devon Mitchell led Hancock with seven points and Hunter McKinley added six points.
