WILLIAMSPORT—The Williamsport boys basketball team put on a floor show on Monday.
The Wildcats used the whole court, steadily building a lead while containing comeback tries by Broadfording Christian for a 71-53 victory over the Lions.
Williamsport (9-8) used a balanced attack, led by Sterling Christy with 21 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists.
Ryan Crabtree added 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, while Nick Johnson collected 15 points and eight rebounds. Ben Seibert grabbed seven rebounds for the Wildcats.
“Tonight, we demonstrated what we are capable of doing at times by pushing the basketball and playing in the open floor,” Williamsport coach Scott Mowbray said.
“Ryan Crabtree did an excellent job of shooting the basketball tonight. Sterling, Riley (Arnone) and Ben all had excellent floor games as well.”
And lost in all the offense, Williamsport’s defense held Broadfording’s 6-foot-7 senior center Mawdo Sallah to eight points.
“We just put Nick on him and he did a nice job,” Mowbray said. “He just made it difficult for him to score. Nick was doing a good job of contesting the shots and boxing out. I am especially pleased with our defensive intensity.”
Moni Anderson finished with 21 points — including five 3-pointers — and five assists for Broadfording (21-7). Sallah added 12 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Ben Cradduck had six rebounds for the Lions.
“My team did not want to play tonight,” Broadfording coach Burnie Clutz said. “My team seemed disinterested tonight and, as a result, we got walloped.”
Broadfording led twice early in the game.
Williamsport took the lead for good at 7-6 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter on a Christy 3-pointer.
It started a 13-4 run that allowed the Wildcats to close out the first quarter for a 17-10 advantage.
Seibert had all seven of his points in the period.
The Wildcats outscored the Lions by a 21-14 margin in both the second and third quarters. Williamsport owned a 38-24 lead at halftime and a 59-38 advantage after three quarters.
Broadfording outscored Williamsport 15-12 in the fourth quarter.
