Williamsport senior Nick Miller hasn’t needed much time to take over his new territory.
The first-year Wildcat, who previously wrestled for Hedgesville, dominated this weekend at North Hagerstown’s 26th annual Hub Cup in his first appearance at Washington County’s largest and most prestigious tournament.
In Saturday night’s championship finals, Miller built an 11-0 lead on Catoctin’s Garrett Buckley in the first period and then pinned him 36 seconds into the second period to win the title at 106 pounds.
“It definitely felt pretty good getting a pin in the finals,” Miller said. “It was a pretty tough tournament, but I was surprised to only get one point scored on me the whole tournament (in his 15-1 win over Greencastle-Antrim’s Wyatt Binkley in the semifinals).
“Now I’m just excited for the next one. I’m always trying to move up. I’m hoping to get some good matches, but most people I talk to say there aren’t many people out there who are going to give me much competition.”
Three other Washington County wrestlers won titles Saturday night — Williamsport junior Bryan Davis (126 pounds), Boonsboro senior Davon Clark (152) and North Hagerstown senior Amont Hawkins (195).
Clark scored three takedowns and a reversal to defeat Mountain Ridge’s Tyler Maynard 9-5 in the finals, becoming the first Hub Cup champ in Boonsboro history.
“It feels good, man. It feels good,” Clark said. “I’ve never been first before. I’ve been a runner-up a lot of times, but this is my first time winning anything. It’s the best feeling in the world, but I still have a lot of work to do.”
Hawkins came from behind to defeat DeMatha Catholic’s Mike Wilkerson 7-5 in overtime in the finals. He trailed 3-2 at the end of the first period and 5-3 at the end of second, before tying the match with a reversal in the third period and then winning it with a takedown with 10 seconds left in sudden-death overtime.
“I just kept telling myself that some people have things to prove and some people have things to lose,” said Hawkins, who was a Hub Cup runner-up at 220 last year. “I definitely had something to prove. I just kept pushing myself, and everything worked out the way I wanted.”
In the finals at 126, Williamsport’s Davis went up 2-0 with a pair of back points in the second period against Urbana’s Morgan Way and never relinquished the lead, prevailing 5-3.
Way, a Hub Cup champ at 106 last year, cut his deficit to 4-3 with a takedown midway through the third period. But Davis escaped for the final two-point margin.
“I remember looking at the clock and seeing 19 seconds left, and I knew I could hold it out,” Davis said. “I’m really excited. My coaches told me if I wrestle like that all the time that people are going to have a tough time beating me.”
In other finals action involving local wrestlers, Greencastle’s Cody Carbaugh (113), Waynesboro’s Kenyon Cuka (138) and Williamsport’s Brandon Iseminger (285) all were pinned, as each finished second in his bracket.
Surprisingly, North Hagerstown junior Brendon Colbert was not in the finals. He fell 6-5 in quadruple overtime in the semifinals to eventual champion Charlie Perella of Catoctin at 132.
It was Colbert’s first loss of the season and the only loss of his career that did not come in a tournament final.
“It happens,” said Colbert, a two-time Maryland state runner-up. “It was a tough match. I’m glad it happened here instead of down at states. It’s just going to make me want to push harder.”
He bounced back with a pair of wins Saturday to place third, improving to 24-1 on the season and 96-5 for his career.
Other third-place finishers included North Hagerstown’s Gene Balcita (126) and Zane Burker (285), South Hagerstown’s Marquil Holt (220) and Waynesboro’s Jesse Smith (145).
Urbana scored 227 points to successfully defended its team title. Catoctin finished second (166.5) in the field of 18 teams, while DeMatha Catholic and North Hagerstown tied for third (161) and Williamsport was fifth (150).
