With games like this, maybe the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils ought to skip the first quarter for the rest of the season.
The Blue Devils overcame a wretched first quarter and a 13-point performance by James Buchanan’s Cheyenne Carbaugh and trounced the Rockets in the next three quarters en route to a convincing 58-35 Mid-Penn Colonial girls basketball victory Friday night.
Led by terrific second-half performances by junior Chloe Hoover and freshman Hannah Crist, the Blue Devils (5-4, 3-2) ran away with a 25-point victory — their largest margin of victory on the year and second highest point total this year.
Both teams were hindered by poor shooting in the first quarter as both combined to shoot a meager 6 of 28 from the field.
Greencastle-Antrim coach Michael Rhine was fortunate that his team was deadlocked at 10-10 after the frame, but was displeased with the performance early on.
“It's been the struggle to find some scoring,” Rhine said. “We've changed the warm-up to try and fix it. It takes a lot of time to get us rolling.”
Rhine would not have to wait for long, as his Blue Devils used a 15-3 run in the second quarter to build a 27-16 halftime lead.
“Our pressure sparked our run. I don't think you always have to start the game the way we want to win the game,” Rhine said. “We turned on the press in the second quarter, and everything opened up so well for us that we couldn't get out of it.”
The thrashing continued in the third quarter. Hoover came alive, matching her point total from the first half (10), sinking two 3s from the wing in less than a minute. Her 10-point performance in the quarter propelled the Blue Devils to a 45-20 lead.
Hoover finished with a game-high 25 points.
“She's awesome, she's our leader,” Rhine said of Hoover. “She's what all of our kids are learning from.”
Crist finished with 11 points for Greencastle, while Katie Gelsinger added 10 in the victory.
Rochelle Timmons and Jennae Piper each had nine points for James Buchanan (1-7, 0-5).
