Senior guard Jessica Barnhart poured in 26 points to lead Clear Spring over Saint James 56-39 on Wednesday night in a Washington County high school girls basketball game.
“We played really well together,” Barnhart said. “We pushed the ball up the court and we got into the tempo that we wanted. Our big players crashed the boards well and that allowed us to get into transition. Our defense really helped me to get set up to score. I scored some of my baskets off of transition.”
Barnhart’s outburst was 11 points above her average. She also added four assists for Clear Spring (3-14).
“Jessica Barnhart stepped up and took control,” Clear Spring coach Adam Hoopengardner said. “She is captain of the team and she showed good leadership. She got out in transition a lot tonight. When our team gets out in transition, it is easier for us to score.”
Sophomore Sam Staley had 18 rebounds for the Blazers, while Alexa Mills had 13 points and four steals and Valerie Carey grabbed seven rebounds for Clear Spring.
Lisle Bruns led Saint James (4-11) with 10 points, 19 rebounds and four steals. Jordan Wills added 14 points, 11 steals and eight rebounds for the Saints, while Margaret Bacon had four steals and four assists.
“Again, we had an aggressive effort,” Saint James coach Louis Canelli said. “But we went through another lapse in the third quarter where we made a lot of mental mistakes. We made a lot of turnovers and we could not recover from that. I was impressed by Clear Spring’s willingness to want the ball more. They just kept going after it.”
The Blazers outscored the Saints 14-2 during the first 5:37 of the game as Barnhart scored nine points.
Saint James reduced the deficit to 25-20 by halftime.
Clear Spring increased its advantage to 48-27 by the end of the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
