Bev Kum had a game-high 19 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Smithsburg past Manchester Valley 45-34 Monday night.
“Bev played tough tonight,” Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said. “She’s started to hit her stride and had been working hard and improving.”
Kum, a sophomore, scored 11 points in the second half. Eight of her rebounds came off the offensive board.
The Leopards (6-10) fell behind early, but closed the first quarter with an 11-0 run, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Sarah Duckworth, for a 14-7 lead.
Haile Houck scored all seven of Manchester Valley’s points in the first quarter, en route to finishing with a double-double of 12 points and 16 rebounds.
“We were without best player (Sarah Bach) tonight, but I thought Haile stepped up,” said Manchester Valley coach Heather DeWees. “People filled (Bach’s) shoes tonight.”
While the Mavericks (6-13) dealt with an incomplete roster, Smithsburg got some of its key players back.
“Everyone’s starting to get healthier now,” Powell said. “This was the first game we’ve had both Bev and Sam (Gladhill).
Smithsburg’s offensive production started slowly in the second quarter but ended in the same manner as the first quarter. This time, Kinsey Shifflett sunk the buzzer-beating 3 to give the Leopards a 23-17 halftime advantage.
The Leopards played stout defense for much of the game, limiting Manchester Valley to two single-digit quarters by not allowing many uncontested shots. Smithsburg rushed to loose balls and was the generally the aggressor.
“We played hard defense tonight,” Powell said. “We’ve giving up leads late in the game in our past few games but I thought we played well tonight.”
The Leopards’ win began a three-game stretch this week. Smithsburg plays Brunswick tonight and Francis Scott Key on Friday.
