BOONSBORO—The Boonsboro girls lacrosse team held its first Senior Night as a varsity sport Tuesday and celebrated with a 13-10 come-from-behind victory over Brunswick.
The Railroaders had a 10-7 advantage with about 18 minutes to play before Boonsboro scored six straight goals to secure the win.
“It was awesome to win on Senior Night,” Boonsboro coach Susan Funke said. “Transition was better tonight and we stayed spread out on offense. The defense was fantastic and played disciplined.”
Tori Poffenberger, a senior, Alex Green and Natalie Young each recorded a hat trick for the Warriors (5-5).
“(Poffenberger) is the power of the offense. She really has a knowledge of where to be,” Funke said. “Other girls were stepping up tonight, setting up their shots and placing them.”
Green scored three of the Warriors’ last six goals during their second-half surge.
Boonsboro goalie Maeve Windsor put together a solid performance, recording 12 saves in the win.
Funke also praised the defense playing in front of Windsor, being especially satisfied with their play as a unit and their communication on the field.
The largest lead at any time throughout the game was three goals and the the score was tied at six different spots during the game after the opening goal.
Ellie Thompson scored first for Brunswick to put the ’Roaders up 1-0. Poffenberger scored Boonsboro’s first goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Both squads traded scores for the remainder of the first half. Boonsboro was up 7-6 with just over a minute left in the opening half but two goals, including a buzzer beater, by Brunswick’s Tara Shriver put the Roaders up 8-7 at the half.
After scoring the first two goals of the second half, Brunswick was held scoreless for the rest of the game.
Lauren O’Connell led Brunswick with four goals and Sarah Zwilsky made 13 saves in the goal.
