COLLEGE BASEBALL

BALTIMORE — Hagerstown Community College went extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader to defeat CCBC-Essex 4-3.

Dylan Dunn delivered a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning in what turned out to be the game-winning run. Essex (17-14) scored one run in the bottom of the eighth.

Terrell Thompson and Eric Schanzenbacher had two hits apiece for HCC.

In the nightcap, the Hawks (23-20) were shut down with six hits, 7-0.

Andrew Zeger had two hits.

Shepherd 11, Alderson-Broaddus 9
PHILIPPI, W.Va. — Aaron Scoville hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to give Shepherd University the lead on Sunday as the Rams held on for a WVIAC victory over Alderson-Broaddus.

Shepherd (25-13, 18-6) used a 13-hit attack to pull out the victory. Bryan DiRosario went 3-for-4 and scored three times, while Scoville and Michael Lott added two hits each.
The Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second, highlighted by Scoville’s two-run single.

Reliever Trevor Appleby (5-3) recored the win, allowing a run on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. Paul Hvozdovic pitched a hitless inning for his third save.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Rams lose two
INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Shepherd University dropped a pair of games to West Virginia State, 8-0 and 1-0.

Sam McQuade, of McConnellsburg, Pa., had three hits in the opener for Shepherd (29-20, 16-6 WVIAC).

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Slippery Rock 22, Shepherd 13
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Holly Webb tallied four goals as Slippery Rock defeated Shepherd University on Sunday.


Slippery Rock opened the game on a 11-2 run, leading to a 17-6 halftime lead.

Junior midfielder Nicole Ruane led the Rams (10-4) with four goals to set a school record for goals in a season with 59. Krista Tippett, Jenny Cavey, and Hayley Roper added two goals each for Shepherd.
  
COLLEGE TRACK & FIELD
GRANTHAM, Pa. — Prince Dawkins placed in four events to help the Hagerstown Community College men finish seventh in a field of 14 teams in the Messiah College Invitational on Saturday.

Dawkins finished fifth in the 200 meters (22.73 seconds), sixth in the 400 (51.16) and eighth in the long jump (20-7 3/4). He joined Brandon Horning, Heisman Johnson and Luis Majano to finish sixth in the 4x800 relay.

Mike Salguero finished seventh in the 1,500 (4:14.43) for the Hawks, while Wyatt Funk was fourth in the high jump (5-8) and Justin Gunne was seventh in the javelin (138-3).

Whitney Murphy placed in three events and Amber Elliot scored points in two as HCC’s women finished 10th in an 11-team field.

Murphy was fourth in the 100 (13.01) and the 200 (27.28), while Elliot took seventh in the 100 (13.28).

Murphy and Elliot joined Victoria Broadwater and Ashley Smothers to finish sixth in the 4x100 relay (53.51).

Pappas wins at Speedway
Nick Pappas started from the front row and never looked back as he led from flag to flag to win the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic late model sportsman feature at Saturday’s Cartoon Family Night at Hagerstown Speedway.

Pappas, of Gaithersburg, Md., collected his first career victory by a 3.28-second margin over Mike Walls.

Hagerstown’s Dave Stouffer Jr. won the Ernie D’s pure stock feature, narrowly holding off Kevin Boyer.                        
              
PREP SOFTBALL
Greencastle splits
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Greencastle defeated State College 11-10 in eight innings but then lost to Lower Dauphin 8-5 in the Lower Dauphin Tournament on Saturday.

Rachel Kline had a game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Blue Devils.

Jenna Crunkleton had a two-run triple among her three hits against State College.

Crunkleton had three hits and Kline had two in the loss to Lower Dauphin.
