In recent years, Boonsboro has played Catoctin tough, even in the years that the Cougars were a very, very good 1A team, not to say they aren’t creditable this season.
A matchup loomed Friday night between two potential MVAL Antietam Conference unbeatens — South Hagerstown and Catoctin — until the Warriors gladly ruined that.
Boonsboro rallied from a seven-point deficit after three quarters to hand Catoctin (6-3, 3-1 Antietam) its first loss while improving to 2-1 in the Antietam and 4-3 overall.
That outcome left South Hagerstown as the only unbeaten in league play with a 3-0 record.
“We held them to no baskets in the fourth quarter,” said Boonsboro coach Sam Connelly. “They had the momentum, but we switched to a matchup 2-3 zone and they had some problems.”
Boonsboro had a double-double performance from Tiffanie Bowman, who netted 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. The 6-foot senior teamed with 6-footer Shannon O’Brien to rule the boards.
“(Bowman) had a great game and is starting to get better, and we’re counting on her,” Connelly said. “We’re also getting good play from Kristyn Davis, who is shooting very well.”
The Warriors get a stern test Friday night when they host North Hagerstown (2-4, 2-2), a 49-45 victor over Williamsport on Wednesday.
“Last year, I think we looked too far ahead of things,” Connelly said. “This year, we’re just taking one game at a time.”
South Hagerstown’s Katrice Dickson leads the individual scoring among Washington County public schools with a 16.0 average.
Covering the Tri-State among schools reporting stats, Sarah Haynes, of Berkeley Springs, leads all players with a 25.2 average.
North Hagerstown’s Kayla Peterson leads the Tri-State in rebounding with a 12.3 average, one rebound per game better than Smithsburg’s Beverly Kum.
Girls Doub final
Wiped out by Mother Nature, the championship game of the Doub Classic will still have a champion when Williamsport meets Allegany on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
The longest current win streak among Washington County girls teams is a modest two games belonging to Hancock.
