Through the heat and the lightning, the Maugansville Junior League All-Stars managed to keep their momentum going, striking down South Mountain 9-7 in the winners’ bracket of the District 1 Junior League Tournament.
Maugansville will play at Conococheague on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the winners’ bracket final. South Mountain will host Valley in the losers’ bracket final Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
South Mountain took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. John Pooling singled with two outs, went to second on Bryce Morgan’s single and scored on Michael Miles’ single.
Maugansville struck for two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead and never trailed from there. With one out, Dylan Alexander reached on an error.
Jared Faith reached on a fielder’s choice on which Alexander was retired for the second out. Faith advanced to second on an infield error and scored when Zane Burker reached on a third South Mountain error. Burker later scored on Josh Miller’s RBI single.
South Mountain tied the game at 2 in the top of the third on David Giffin’s double that scored Tom Schnackenberg.
Maugansville scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take control. Jordan Washington led off with a double, Steven Eyler singled and Kenny Daniels hit an RBI double. Jay Forrest’s groundout scored Eyler, and Daniels scored on a single by Alexander, who scored on Jared Faith’s single.
Maugansville struck for three more runs in the fourth. Washington singled, stole second and took third on a passed ball. Eyler walked and stole secon before Daniels hit a two-run double down the line. Daniels scored after a wild pitch and a passed ball for a 9-2 lead.
South Mountain got a run back in the fifth, then took advantage of an error and four consecutive walks to score four runs in the sixth to close the gap to 9-7.
Maugansville scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 14-7 lead, but lightning led to a delay before the game was called official with a 9-7 final score.
