Special travels are in store this weekend for two Tri-State area teams, weather permitting.
The third annual Maryland-Pennsylvania Showcase Challenge takes place Saturday at Gettysburg High School. It became a large one-day event when Gettysburg boys head coach Jeff Bair realized a dream of making it an attraction in the Adams County area.
Chambersburg (10-6) begins the activities with a 12:30 p.m. tipoff against Western Tech (9-5). North Hagerstown (10-4) tips off against West York (8-10) at 3:30, and Highland View Academy (14-4) goes against New Oxford (5-12) in the finale at 8.
There are two other games, as Delone Catholic meets Frederick at 2 and host Gettysburg goes against Poolesville at 5.
In another part of the country, Martinsburg is in northeast Ohio for a pair of tough games.
Friday night, Martinsburg (12-1) plays Massilllon Washington (6-6), better known for its national stature in high school football.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs will go against a big Villa Angela-St. Joseph team that is 11-2 and currently ranked second in Ohio’s Division IV poll.
It will be part of the Dunk 4 Diabetes Classic held at Walsh University in Canton, Ohio, with seven games on Saturday and six more on Sunday. Martinsburg tips off at 6 on Saturday.
The highlight of the Saturday schedule is the nightcap in which Mentor (Ohio), ranked in the Top 10 in Ohio’s Division I, meets Huntington Prep (W.Va.), one of the elite prep teams in the nation, at 9 p.m.
Top recruits
According to MaxPreps, the current 2013 recruiting class is headed by Kameron Williams of Mt. St. Joseph — who will head to Ohio State — Josh Hart of Sidwell Friends (Villanova) and Rodney Peters of Suitland (Maryland).
Those in the Top 100 for the class of 2014 include Saint James’ Obi Enechionyia (No. 86), Phil Booth of Mt. St. Joseph and Dwayne Morgan of St. Frances Academy.
McDonald’s All-Americans
The McDonald’s All-American game is scheduled for April 3 at the United Center in Chicago.
Three Tri-State area players — Martinsburg’s Donte Grantham and Jalen Lewis and Hedgesville’s Chris Shields — are among the 830 boys and girls who have been nominated for the game.
The boys and girls rosters, consisting of two 12-player boys and girls teams each, will be announced on Feb. 14. The boys game will be televised by ESPN and the girls on ESPNU.
Other players nominated from Maryland include Lawrence True of Maret School, Josh Hart of Sidwell Friends, Mike Owana of John Carroll, Trevon Saddler of St. Frances Academy and Kameron Williams of Mt. St. Joseph.
