“This is a big win, a very big win, for South Hagerstown High School,” he said.

“I give all the credit to South,” Boonsboro coach Mike McGill said. “They really brought it as a team, and we were just outfought in a couple of spots. They were just better today.”

While Boonsboro went winless as a team, the Warriors prevailed in the two marquee individual matchups of the day against Williamsport. At 126, Charles Anoman defeated Barry Loeser, Williamsport’s lone returning county champion, 7-2. And at 132, Dalton Hawkins got by Bryan Davis, the Wildcats’ lone returning Maryland 2A-1A state placewinner, 3-1 in overtime.

“I’m happy about the win, but I’m still not satisfied,” said Hawkins, who lost 1-0 to Davis in last season’s West region consolation semifinals at 120 with a state berth on the line. “I feel like I could have done better — today and last year.”

Hawkins, Jake Stauffer (113), Jack Riley (145) and Brad Hull (160) each went 2-0 Saturday for the Warriors.
