The Clyde Downs Trophy has returned to the place it’s called home more often than anywhere else — Williamsport High School.
The Wildcats came out on top at the 23rd annual Washington County Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, taking home the trophy for the fourth time in the last five years and 10th time overall. No school has captured it more times.
“This is always our No. 1 team goal at the beginning of the year, to win the county title,” Williamsport coach Mike Rechtorovic said.
The Wildcats won six of the 14 weight-class titles and finished with 211 points. North Hagerstown, last year’s champion, was a close second with 200, while Smithsburg edged host Boonsboro 110-108 for third and South was fifth (67).
Williamsport, which hadn’t competed since Jan. 30, showed no signs of rust. The Wildcats clearly didn’t treat the 16-day stretch of no matches as down time.
“For two weeks, we trained hard,” Rechtorovic said. “We went to work and really, really pushed each other in the room. And it paid off.”
Williamsport, which led North 183-177 heading into the finals, won titles in the first four championship bouts. Nick Miller won by pin at 106 pounds, while Justin Beckley (113), Tanner Canfield (120) and Bryan Davis (126) each won by decision as the Wildcats took a commanding 201-177 lead over the Hubs.
“Four in a row, it definitely didn’t hurt,” Rechtorovic said. “And three of the four were close matches. You have to win the close matches, especially this time of the year.”
North answered in the next two bouts, as Brendon Colbert won by major decision at 132 for his third straight county title and Gene Balcita won by pin at 138 for his second straight title, cutting the Hubs’ deficit to 201-188.
Overall, North and Williamsport faced off five times in the finals, with the Wildcats prevailing in three of them.
Perhaps none was bigger than Williamsport freshman Kobe Baker’s 6-4 decision over North senior Diantra Landry in the finals at 145, in what had to be considered at least a small upset.
With the victory, the Wildcats extended their lead over North to 205-188, while Williamsport’s Baker brothers improved to 9-for-9 in county finals.
Kemper Baker, a 2011 graduate, and Killian Baker, a 2012 grad, were both four-time county champs for the Wildcats. Killian joined the short list of four-timers last year, winning an 8-7 overtime thriller over Landry, whom Kobe had to face in his final Saturday.
“I thought I was going to lose,” Kobe Baker said. “I felt pressure to win, but I was nervous. I knew if I lost that Kemper would hold it against me, Killian too.
“I just wanted to win because it was the county finals — and because I didn’t want to hear it from Kemper.”
Title victories by North’s Coleman McHose (152) and Amont Hawkins (182) cut the Hubs’ deficit to nine at 205-196, before Austin Keadle sealed it for the Wildcats, winning by injury default over North’s Antonio Rosario at 195.
“Williamsport came after this tournament hard and fast,” North coach Greg Slick said. “That was their goal, and they wanted it more than we did. Our kids did all they could, but Williamsport was just a better team. They deserve to take that trophy home.”
Aaron Dopson (285) gave the Hubs a fifth title.
The other champs were Boonsboro’s Brad Hull (160), Smithsburg’s Dalton Condo (170) and South’s Marquil Holt, who won his second straight 220 title.
