CLEAR SPRING—The Clear Spring softball team once again excelled in all facets of the game, defeating Hancock 13-0 in 4 1/2 innings Monday.
“We played well in all three phases: Defense, offense and pitching,” Clear Spring coach Ron Baker said. “For the most part, we have played reasonably good defense with some good sound hitting this year. The pitching has been consistent by Amber Forrest and Kristen Mellott. As long as we continue to excell in all three of those areas, I feel that we can do well in the playoffs. We still have to work on a few things in practice.”
The Blazers (15-2) shined in the field, not committing an error, and they were patient and selective at the plate as they forced two Panthers’ pitchers to throw 105 pitches in four innings. Clear Spring had 11 hits and drew five walks.
Forrest fired a two-hit shutout to raise her pitching record to 8-1, allowing two walks and striking out seven in five innings.
“I was just working the corners with my pitches,” Forrest said. “It came out as good as I thought it would. It was a good team effort on everybody’s part. We just played good defense and hit the ball well today. Everyone stepped up.”
Forrest also had two hits and two RBIs, giving her 30 hits in 55 at-bats for a team-leading .546 batting average. Her 16 RBIs rank second on the team behind freshman Lexi Albert’s 19 RBIs.
Jenna Knable and Brooklyn Drury each had two hits, and Alexa Mills and Kristen Mellott each had two RBIs for Clear Spring.
Tatum True and Joan Leavy each had a hit for Hancock (7-8).
“We can’t compete against a good team like this when we make five errors and give up five walks,” Hancock coach Todd Ruppenthal said. “Clear Spring has a really good team. Amber Forrest throws the ball real well. I hope they go far in the playoffs.”
Clear Spring scored one run in the first and three runs in the second. The Blazers then sent 14 batters to the plate in the third and scored nine runs to up the lead to 13-0.
