WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Hagerstown Community College heated up after a slow start and routed Baltimore 78-41 Saturday at the HCC athletic complex.
Tashia Caldwell finished with 17 points and Jasmie Reynolds added 11 for the Hawks, who took the lead at 18-17 with about 8 minutes left in the first half. HCC led 34-21 at halftime.
“That seems to be typical for us to start out slow like that,” HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. “But we got a good team effort tonight.”
Yolanda Pinkcett had 13 rebounds and Turquoia Johnson had 12 as the Hawks (13-3, 6-2 Maryland JuCo Conference) dominated Baltimore on the boards, 66-34.
HCC has difficult matchups against Prince George’s, Delaware Tech and Allegany this week.
“We’ll see if we can get a win and tell what we’re all about,” Palmer said. “We’re still looking for that signature win.”

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Lindsay Kentner scored 23 points to lead University of Charleston to a win over Shepherd University in the WVIAC.
Ali Tobias added 16 points and Tarena Dixon had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Jerica Hewett scored 17 points to pace the Rams.
Shelby Fayak added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Biggs came off the bench to toss in 10 points.
Shepherd rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to get to within five points in the game’s final minute, but the Golden Eagles held on for the win.

HCC 80, Baltimore 63
Hagerstown broke open a tight game in the second half, rolling past Baltimore in the Maryland JuCo Conference.
Jasmin Handanovic had 14 points and Alister Chisholm finished with 13 for the Hawks, who led by just one at the intermission.
But the Hawks (14-3) took higher percentage shots in the second half, and Lauren Coates shut down Baltimore’s top scorer, Micah Fraction. Fraction finished with 14 points, but had just two in the second half.
D’Quan Lynch had 10 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals, Dameatric Scott had 10 points, six rebounds, nine assists and four steals and Devin Miller had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — James Eversley scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead University of Charleston to a win over Shepherd University in the WVIAC.
Ibrahim Marone added 16 points and seven boards for the Golden Eagles.
Chad Moore scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to pace the Rams. Moore also had a game-high three assists.
Jonathan Motichka added 14 points and Dave Karlson tossed in 12.
Shepherd rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to tie the game at 64-64 on a pair of Karlson free throws with 2:32 to play, but Charleston hit 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
BOYS BASKETBALL
South Western 59, Waynesboro 45
WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Rafe Sanders hit six of his eight 3-pointers in the second half as South Western pulled away from Waynesboro.
Cole Warrenfeltz had 13 points and four steals, Derek Null had 11 points and five rebounds and Johnnie Adgers added 10 points for the Indians (0-11).

Peterson finished with 13 points, 16 rebounds and eight steals, Taylor Deveaux had 12 points and Margaret Bacon and Lisle Bruns each had 10 points for the Saints (5-3). Jordan Wills had eight points, six assists and six rebounds.

Callie Butts, Jessica Gaylor and Kathleen Kidd each scored eight points for Heritage (11-1, 6-0). Butts had six assists and six steals, Gaylor had five rebounds and three steals, and Kidd added three assists.

POTTSTOWN, Pa. — Mercersburg Academy finished third out of 10 teams at the King of the Hill tournament at Hill School.
Nick Carberry (130 pounds) and Bobby Burg (160) won titles in their weight classes for the Blue Storm. John San Fillipo (189) was second, Arvind Stone (152) took third, Alex Kelly (171) finished fourth, Roberto Solis (119), Will Appleman (140) and Sam Rogers (215) each took fifth and James Hendrickson (145) was sixth.

Legion baseball registration
Early registration for the 2011 Funkstown American Legion senior baseball team and Williamsport Senators junior legion team will be Feb. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Feb 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at Extra Innings west of Hagerstown.
Players from every school in Washington County except Boonsboro will be able to try out for Funkstown. Returning legion players from Boonsboro will still be able to play. For information, contact Jeff Williams at 240-527-7320.
