Rebels' Rowland wins 4A-3A North 285 title

PREP WRESTLING

BALTIMORE — South Hagerstown’s Aaron Rowland was the champion at 285 pounds Saturday at the Maryland Class 4A-3A North region championships at Patapsco High School.

In the finals, Rowland, the No. 3 seed, edged top-seeded Jonathan Finnerty of Towson 2-1.

“He wrestled great this weekend,” said South coach Donnie Rowland, Aaron’s father. “He beat the No. 2 seed 9-2 in the semifinals. I’m real proud of him.”

Also for South, James Wilson (130 pounds) and Chris Collins (189) each placed fifth, while Marquil Holt (215) was sixth.



GIRLS BASKETBALL

Norhern Garrett 80, Clear Spring 31

ACCIDENT, Md. — No. 2-seed Northern Garrett made 12 3-pointers and outscored Clear Spring 42-10 in the first half in a Maryland Class 1A West Region West Sectional quarterfinal.

Heather Schlotterbeck led the Blazers (3-20) with 12 points. Jess Barnhart had seven rebounds and three assists, and Amber Forrest and Sam Staley each added five rebounds.

Grace Academy squeaked past Faith Christian in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference third-place game.

Kelsey Koontz led the Knights (15-10) with 11 points. Tori Aikens and Victoria Broadwater each added nine points.

Hannah Dopson led Faith (19-7) with 16 points and Jackie Solenberger added 13.

PREP HOCKEY

Northstars 5, Montgomery-Blair 2

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Zach Kimmel had two goals and two assists on Friday night as the Washington County Northstars beat Montgomery-Blair in the semifinals of the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League Co-Op Division state tournament.

J.R. Lowery had a goal and an assist for the Northstars (17-1-2). Kevin McCormack and Shawn Kreps each scored a goal, while Drew Brooks, Gage Clifford, Arizona Zervas and Keith Koontz each had an assist. Mikhail Gardner made 13 saves.

The Northstars will face Leonardtown for the state title on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Laurel.



COLLEGE BASEBALL

Southeastern 10-4, HCC 0-5

WHITEVILLE, N.C. — Danny Morris hit a game-winning two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to lead Hagerstown Community College past Southeastern in the second game of a season-opening doubleheader.

Morris finished with three doubles and two RBIs, Marcellus Sumlin had two hits and an RBI, Seth Poffenberger had two hits and Colby Fisher pitched three shutout innings in relief to pick up the win for the Hawks (1-1).

In the opener, Sumlin had both of HCC’s hits but the Hawks committed five errors, leading to five unearned runs in a shutout loss.

Breslin gets conference honors

LANCASTER, Pa. — Washington College (Md.) junior guard Kevin Breslin, a St. Maria Goretti graduate, has been named to the All-Centennial Conference first team.

Breslin led Washington in scoring at 18.7 points per game and averaged 5.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals. He was fourth in the conference in scoring.

Breslin was named to the second team last year.

Big League registration

District 1 Little League is expanding its youth baseball program by offering a Big League Division for players ages 16-18 at the Maugansville Little League complex. Interested players must live in the District 1 boundaries and provide three proofs of residency within the district before Feb. 1, 2011. Registration will be held March 19 from 1 to 3 p.m., March 21 at 6 p.m. and March 22 at 6 p.m. Registration fee is $65, and a birth certificate is required.
