FROSTBURG, Md. — Clear Spring dashed the hopes of No. 1-seed Mountain Ridge in the Maryland 1A West quarterfinals on Monday with a 6-1 victory over the Miners.

The Blazers (8-12) will travel to Catoctin (14-5) on Wednesday for a semifinal clash, hoping to avenge two regular-season losses.

Adam Mellott pitched four strong innings for Clear Spring, allowing only one run — a leadoff home run in the first inning — on four hits. He struck out four.

Austin Yost and Nick Hill cleaned up for Mellott, with Hill squelching a potential Mountain Ridge uprising in the sixth inning by getting two outs.

Clear Spring went ahead 2-1 in the second inning, helped by two Mountain Ridge errors.

C.J. Elwood — running for Dylan Stouffer, who had singled — scored on an errant throw on Brent Mentzer’s bunt. Mentzer also scored when the relay throw back to the infield was wild.

The Blazers tacked on four runs in the fifth. Stouffer drove in two runs with a double and Tyler Walling brought in a pair with a single.

“Mellott’s pitched well in his  last few outings and did so again,” said coach Mark Shives. “This was a good win for a young team.”
