PREP TRACK & FIELD
FREDERICK, Md. — Jaid Sandeen was a double-winner for South Hagerstown on Wednesday during the first day of the Maryland Class 3A West region championships at Tuscarora.
Sandeen won the girls pole vault and teamed with Elizsha Streeter, Kayla Freeman and Kiona Mency to win the 4x200-meter relay.
The top four finishers in each event automatically qualified for next week’s state meet in Baltimore.
Sandeen also placed fourth in the triple jump.
For the South boys, Reggie Moody placed second in the long jump and teamed with Isiah Smith, Chip Rittenhouse and Jordan Alston to place second in the 4x200.
The meet concludes today.
“I think we had a good day,” South coach Dwayne Freeman said. “I expected our kids to come out and give a good effort, and they did that. Tomorrow is a bigger day, and I expect more good performances.”
Official results with times and distances were not available.

Bushey under par
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Smithsburg graduate Chris Bushey had one of the best scores in the second round of the NJCAA Division II Nationals, firing a 3-under-par 69 for Potomac State College.
Bushey’s two-day total stands at 2-over 146 after Monday’s opening 77, leaving him tied for 12th in the medal standings. His score led Potomac State to a 293 team total, 19 strokes better then Monday and a jump to 11th place.
Hagerstown Community College golfer Zach Weber, a Williamsport graduate, shot a 77 for a two-day total of 157.
Grier, teammates struggle
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Smithsburg graduate Alicia Grier and her Coastal Carolina teammates struggled in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Division I Championship.
Grier shot a 39-43—82 to finish 10 strokes over par on the 6,260-yard Traditions Golf Club course.
Making its first ever appearance, Coastal Carolina ended the round with 322, 33 strokes behind first-place UCLA’s 289.
Virginia’s Brittany Altomare was the medalist leader with a 3-under 69.

Shepherd’s Minnich named region player of the year
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Shepherd junior designated hitter Nathan Minnich was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Atlantic Regional Player of the Year.
Minnich, a Waynesboro graduate, batted .433 with 52 hits in 120 at-bats. He had 14 home runs, nine doubles 38 RBIs and 42 runs scored, ranking among the NCAA Division II leaders in several categories.

Shepherd’s Dudek, Pitcock earn all-region first-team honors
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Shepherd senior outfielder Amber Dudek and senior pitcher/first baseman Nichole Pitcock were both named to the 2011 Daktronics All-Atlantic Region First Team.
Dudek batted .320 and led the Rams in hits (48), doubles (13), total bases (73) and tied for the team lead in home runs (four). She was second on the team in slugging percentage (.487) and RBIs (29).
Pitcock went 23-6 with a 1.61 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 179 innings, setting singe-season school records in wins and strikeouts. She also batted .314 with a team-high 35 RBIs.

Schultz misses qualifying
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Beaver Creek pro Dirk Schultz just missed gaining a spot in the Nationwide Tour Melwood Open during Monday’s qualifier at the University of Maryland Golf Club.
Schultz had bogeys on three of his first four holes on the front nine and ended with a 1-under-par 70, finishing in an alternate spot for the Melwood Open June 3-6 in College Park.
Schultz posted three birdies on the back nine for a 3-under 33.
The top two qualifying spots went to John O’Leary (68) and Brendan McGrath (69). Fountain Head Country Club pro Jim Schouller shot a 4-over 75.

BRIEFS
Nick Adenhart 5K on June 11
The second annual Nick Adenhart 5K Run and Walk will be held June 11 at Byron Memorial Park in Williamsport.
There also will be a 1K Rookie Race for children 12 and under.
Registration and packet pickup begins at 7 a.m., the kids race starts at 8:30 and the 5K starts at 9.
The 5K registration fee is $25 — or $20 before May 31. The Rooke Race fee is $10.
All proceeds benefit the Nick Adenhart Foundation and the Hagerstown Fairgrounds Softball Association.

Pete Wright All-Comers track meets start June 7 at North High
The 13th annual Back-on-Track Pete Wright Memorial Summer All-Comers Track & Field Series, for athletes of all ages and abilities, will once again be held on Tuesday evenings at North Hagerstown’s Callas Stadium.
The series dates are June 7, June 21, July 5, July 19 and Aug. 2. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m. and events begin at 6:30.
Events include races of 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters, the mile and 2-mile, the 4x100 and 4x400 relays and the long jump, shot put and discus.
The cost is $2 per event for adults. Students compete for free.
