PREP BASEBALL
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. — Jefferson yielded two runs to Elkins in the second inning and then proceeded with their own bats to chalk up a 10-2 victory and the West Virginia Class AAA Region II championship on Wednesday night at Sager Field.
The Cougars (31-7), who have won a state-record nine state championships, captured the region title for the first time since 2007.
After Elkins (18-6) took its early lead, Jefferson came back in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs on a two-run double by Anthony DiAmario.
In the third, Jefferson took a 3-2 lead when Logan Johnson walked and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice. The scoring continued when J.P. Jones doubled in Cory Mangold and Jamie Richard hit a two-run home run.
DiAmario had a run-scoring single that highlighted a four-run fifth inning.
Tanner Everton pitched the first five innings for the win, allowing five hits and two walks while striking our four. Chris Payne closed it out with two innings of relief.
Richard and DiAmario each had with three hits.

All-Star Classic set for Monday
Municipal Stadium will be the venue Monday for the final prep baseball event of 2011 with the Mid-Atlantic Baseball Classic.
Two games are on the agenda, beginning with the Diamond Stars contest at 1 p.m. The Elite Classic will start at 4 p.m.
Tickets for the doubleheader are $8. Both games are nine-inning contests.
Several top players from the Mid-Atlantic region will be playing, including four who have signed to play at the University of Maryland — Bobby Ruse of C. Milton Wright, Matt Bosse of Calvert Hall, Shane Campbell of Kenwood and K.J. Hockday of John Carroll. In addition, Joseph Vanderplas of Fairfax (Va.), who is committed to Tennessee, will be on hand and is expected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft.
Most of the Washington County senior stars will play in the Diamond Stars game.
The Elite Classic roster includes Ryne Willard (Smithsburg), Connor Arnone (Williamsport), Ty Benson (North Hagerstown) and Hagerstown native Christian Binford (Mercersburg Academy).
