CLEAR SPRING — Haley Thorn plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder and Clear Spring shut out Catoctin 1-0 in the season and MVAL Antietam opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Amber Forrest had three hits, including a double, and Heather Schlotterbeck had two hits for the Blazers (1-0).

SMITHSBURG — North Carroll stunned Smithsburg with four runs in the seventh inning to spoil the Leopards’ season opener.
Smithsburg used three pitchers in the seventh, with J.R. Rinehart taking the loss. Brad Spickler threw six shutout innings with three strikeouts.
