HCC bounces back to earn split

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Hagerstown Community College overcame a shaky performance in Game 1 to earn a doubleheader split with Cecil College on Sunday afternoon.

Cecil scored six runs in the first inning, banged out 14 hits and took advantage of five HCC errors to win the first game of the twinbill, 13-3.

Cole Sellers drove in all three HCC runs with a double in the fifth inning.

Hagerstown rebounded in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead after one inning and beating Cecil 5-3.

Sellers had an RBI groundout, Danny Morris had an RBI single and Dylan Dunn drove in Morris with a double in the Hawks’ first inning.

Dunn and Jacob Keeney each had two hits and Eric Schanzenbacher had two RBIs for HCC (17-14).

George Washington 8, Shepherd 5

ARLINGTON, Va. — George Washington scored five runs in the fifth inning to come from behind for a victory over Shepherd University.

Grant Brown highlighted the rally with a two-run double to give the Colonials a 6-5 lead. Brown drove in two insurance runs for GW in the sixth.

Nathan Minnich, Jake Cook and Travis Sluger each had a pair of hits for the Rams (17-11). Minnich drove in Shepherd’s first run in the first and Cook had an two-run hit in the third as the Rams took a 3-0 lead.



COLLEGE SOFTBALL

HCC 7, Corning CC 4

WILLIAMSPORT — HCC rallied from a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth and four in the seventh to beat Corning Community College at Kemps Mill.

Carly Mowen started the sixth-inning outburst with a single. Kayla Ewing, Jess Hartman and Sarah Mullin followed with three straight doubles to put the Hawks (11-8) right back in the game.

Ragan Shaw started the Hagerstown seventh with a single. With one out, Brittany Heller singled to move Shaw to third. After Mowen was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Ewing followed with a shot to right field that was scored an error, but plated Shaw and Heller with the tying and go-ahead runs.

Mullin provided insurance with a two-run double. She finished with three hits and three RBIs. Ewing and Mowen each had two hits.

Wheeling 4-2, Shepherd 1-5

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Bianca Biondillo had three hits and three RBIs to lead Shepherd University to a win in the nightcap of a doubleheader split with Wheeling Jesuit.

Wheeling won the opener of the WVIAC twinbill, 4-1.

Biondillo had a two-run triple in the first and an RBI single in the fourth to lift the Rams (20-15, 7-3).

Sam McQuade had a pair of hits to lead the Rams in the opener.



PREP BASEBALL

Mercersburg 5-2, Peddie 0-4

HIGHTSTOWN, N.J. — Michael Collins threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Mercersburg Academy blanked Peddie School in the first game of a Mid-Atlantic Prep League doubleheader split.

John Olszewski went 2-for-3 and George Molner drove in two runs for the Blue Storm (7-2, 1-1).

Pat Lien and Joe Sanchez each had two hits for Mercersburg in the second game.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Berkeley Springs got two fine pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep of Petersburg on Saturday.

Jared Spielman threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the first game and helped his own cause with two doubles and three RBIs. Brady Spielman had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Zane Mokhiber also had two hits for the Indians (4-6).

Preston Hovermale allowed just three hits in six innings while striking out 11 in the second game.

Tyler Holt had three hits, Mokhiber had two hits and three RBIs and Jared Spielman hit a two-run homer for the Indians.



PREP SOFTBALL

Peddie 7-15, Mercersburg Academy 1-0

HIGHSTOWN, N.J. — Peddie School took advantage of Mercersburg Academy’s inexperience to sweep a MAPL doubleheader on Sunday.

Peddie jumped out early with the help of three Blue Storm errors in the opener.

Mercersburg Academy pitcher Sydney Reath pitched the complete game with five strikeouts. She had two hits, while Shelby Smith added two hits and an RBI for the Blue Storm (2-2, 0-2).

Peddie put away the nightcap by using eight Mercersburg walks and a nine-run fifth inning to end the game by the mercy rule.

Reath led the way by collecting two of Mercersburg’s three hits.
