COLLEGE BASEBALL
The Hagerstown Community College baseball team stayed on the winning track Saturday afternoon, beating the Shenandoah University JV team 14-4 in eight innings.
The Hawks (22-19) have won three in a row. Shenandoah JV is now 7-7.
“In the last three games, we have played well,” HCC coach Scott Jennings said. “But we have some tough games coming up.”
HCC starter Dylan Schaeffer (4-3) allowed three earned runs and one walk in seven innings to get the win.
“In the beginning of the game, I was a little wild,” Schaeffer said. “Once I pitched a few innings, I started to settle in. I pretty much pounded the zone to make them hit it. I felt I threw pretty good. It wasn’t quite as good as I wanted it to be, but it was good enough to get back on track.”
“Dylan did a good job,” Jennings said. “He threw strikes consistently all day. He only gave up one walk in seven innings. That kept him out of danger.”
HCC got plenty of offensive production from the bottom third of its batting order as Chris Kulik, Andrew Zeger and Jacob Kenney collected three hits apiece.
Kulik ended up with four runs scored and an RBI, Zeger had four RBIs and three runs scored and Kenney had three RBIs and one run scored.
“From the third inning on, we were hitting the ball well,” Jennings said. “We had nine hits out of the 7-8-9 hitters. That was a big lift for us.”
HCC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by Kenney and an error.
After the Hornets got a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to tie the score, the Hawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good at 5-2. The Hawks got a RBI single by Zeger and sacrifice flies by Terrell Thompson and Eric Schanzenbacher.
HCC tacked on a run in the fifth on a RBI safety squeeze by Zeger.
The Hawks exploded for seven runs in the sixth to boost the lead to 13-2. The Hawks’ runs came on a RBI single by Drew DeShong, a RBI double by Schanzenbacher, RBI singles by Josh Knupp and Kulik, a two-run triple by Zeger and a RBI single by Kenney.
HCC was two outs away from winning by the 10-run rule in the top of the seventh when Tyler Richter smacked a two-run triple for Shenandoah.
HCC then won by the 10-run rule at 14-4 in the bottom of the eighth on a game-ending RBI single by Kenney.
