COLLEGE SOFTBALL
BALTIMORE — Hagerstown Community College defeated Chesapeake 7-4 in the Hawks’ first game of the NJCAA Region XX Final Four double-elimination tournament Saturday.
HCC scored three runs in the top of the inning to take a 3-2 lead and then scored four in the ninth to break a 3-3 tie.
Carly Mowen had two doubles and four RBIs for the Hawks, while Candace Horchner had three hits and an RBI and winning pitcher Megan Peomroy had two hits, including an RBI double, in the victory.
HCC will play at least two more games Sunday, beginning with a game against Catonsville at 11 a.m.

Weber leads HCC
CUMBERLAND, Md. — Williamsport graduate Zach Weber shot a 75 to lead Hagerstown Community College in the first day of the NJCAA Division II Region XX Golf Championships at Rocky Gap Lodge & Resort.
HCC shot 323 in the first day, five shots behind Potomac State.
Dave Daubach and Jason Long each shot 82 and former Smithsburg golfer Matt Snowden had an 83.
Potomac State’s Chris Bushey, also a Smithsburg graduate, shot 82.
At stake is a team berth and five individual berths to the national finals May 17-20 at Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro, Ala.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Lehigh University freshman Jonelle Jerwick, a 2011 Smithsburg graduate, placed fifth in the women’s pole vault at the Patriot League Championships at 11 feet, 7 3/4 inches.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Delaware Valley College’s Tracey Forsythe, a Williamsport graduate, placed second in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:22.15 at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, earning first-team all-MAC honors.

South girls win 4x100 relay
SYKESVILLE, Md. — South Hagerstown’s Elizsha Streeter, Paige Flemings, Whitney Jarrett and Hayley Freeman won the girls 4x100-meter relay in 49.59 seconds Saturday at the MVAL Piedmont championships.
The majority of the meet was held Thursday before it was suspended due to weather.
Also Saturday, North Hagerstown’s Raven Jackson placed third in the girls triple jump (34-9 1/2).
Swope paces Goretti
MERCERSBURG, Pa. — St. Maria Goretti’s Mitch Swope won the boys 1,600-meter run in 4:51.5 and teamed with Kevin Proctor, Tyler Caruso and Patrick Jones to win the 4x800 relay in 9:57.3 at the Independent Parochial School League Championships.

BOONSBORO — Catoctin score two unearned runs with two outs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead and record an MVAL Antietam win over Boonsboro.
Warriors starter Riley Stephenson struck out five in six innings, but fell victim to the unearned runs to take the loss.
Scott Bennett, who hit a two-run homer in the fourth to tie the game at 2-all, led Boonsboro with two hits.
The Warriors (9-10, 7-7) scored on a balk and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning but couldn’t rally.

Mercersburg splits DH
MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Mercersburg Academy catcher Pat Lien continued his hot hitting, going 6-for-7 in the Blue Storm’s doubleheader split with Linsly School.
Lien went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the first game, a 5-4 loss. Mike Collins went the distance for Mercersburg, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight.
In the second game, Trustin Riley scored the winning run from second base on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as the Blue Storm won 4-3.
Lien had two hits and two RBIs, John Olszewski added two hits and Lorenzo Vazquez hit a solo homer for Mercersburg (19-4).

Beaver Creek falls short
Beaver Creek Country Club fell short in its quest for a second Maryland State Golf Association A Team Match Play championship on Saturday, losing to Rolling Road Golf Club 10-8.
Beaver Creek held a 5-4 advantage at home as the team of Bernie Deane and Justin Neikirk won 3-0, the team of Chuck Thatcher and Tim Doreen halved with 1.5 points and Greg Henry and Randy Barnes salvaged a half-point.
At Rolling Road, Dirk Schultz and Ken Lampard won 2.5 points and Chris Taylor and A.J. Edmonston won a half-point as Rolling Road held a 6-3 advantage. Steve Ligi and Finley Benjamin were shut out.
Along the way in the 64-club field, Beaver Creek defeated Fountain Head, Cumberland, Holly Hills, Congressional and University of Maryland to reach the finals. Beaver Creek won the title in 2010.
Also, Saturday was the first round of the Team Match Play in the women’s division.
Beaver Creek fell to Towson Golf & Country Club, 9-3.
Dixie McNaney and Mary Beth Lesher won 1.5 points and Quay Scott and Judy Rudy won .5 at Beaver Creek, while Ginny White and Cindy Crowl won 1 point at Towson.
