WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Golf professsionals from Washington County fared well in the first round of the Middle Atlantic PGA Professional Championship on Monday at Kingsmill Resort.
Playing his first round on the 6,805-yard, par-71 River Course, Fountain Head Country Club pro Jim Schouller shot a 3-under-par 68 for a tie for fifth place. Schouller had an eagle and two birdies against one bogey for his round.
Beaver Creek Country Club pro Dirk Schultz played his opening round on the 6,638-yard, par-72 Woods Course and ended with a 2-under-par 70, good for a tie for seventh place. Schultz had four birdies and two bogeys.
Two-time defending champion David Hutsell, of Elkridge, Md., set the pace with a bogey-free, 8-under-par 64.
Players switch courses Tuesday and the cut will be made for Wednesday’s final round when 14 players will qualify for the PNC Nationals next June.
LAYTONSVILLE, Md. — Beaver Creek member Greg Henry, of Boonsboro, had a respectable outing in the opening round of the 26th annual Maryland Golf Association Men’s Mid-Amateur at Blue Mash Golf Club.
Henry shot a 3-over-par 74 at Blue Mash, which covered 6,771 yards. He had two birdies, offset by five bogeys. He was in a tie for 23rd place. Dan Walker, of the University of Maryland, and Walter Jew, of Norbeck Country Club, set the pace at 3-under 68.
The final round will be played Tuesday.
FARMINGTON, Pa. — Chambersburg’s Clayton Rotz shared the lead after the first round of the 96th Pennyslvania Open following a 6-under-par 66 at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.
Rotz birdied three of the par 5s along the way and had seven birds overall, offset only by a bogey on the 18th hole.
He shared the lead with Joe Boros, of Saxonsburg, and John Popeck, of Washington.
Waynesboro pro Chad Bricker was in a tie for 46th place following a 3-over-par 75 over the 7,124-yard course, where the second round will be played Tuesday.
The top 70 and ties will play in the final round on Wednesday.
Shepherd 19th in preseason poll
WACO, Texas — The Shepherd University football team is ranked 19th in the 2012 AFCA Division II Coaches’ Preseason Poll for Aug. 13. Defending national champion Pittsburg State is No. 1.
The Rams, coming off a 9-2 record in 2011, open the 2012 campaign on Sept. 1 at Shippensburg.

Williamsport Nationals fall ball
Tryouts for the Williamsport Nationals fall ball baseball team will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Williamsport High School. Tryouts are open to incoming high school freshmen, sophomores and age-eligible juniors.
This will be the Williamsport Nationals’ first fall ball team, and they will compete in the Tri-State Fall Baseball League.

Gary Brown 5-Miler on Aug. 25
The 31st annual Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5-Mile Run will be held Aug. 25, starting and ending at Riverbottom Park in Williamsport.
Race-day registration and packet pickup starts at 7 a.m. and the race begins at 8.
The registration fee is $25 (or $15 for students) by Aug. 15 and $30 (or $20 for students) after Aug. 15 and on the day of the race. All finishers will receive a T-shirt and awards will go to the top overall and age-group finishers.
