BOYS BASKETBALL

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Martinsburg, the top-ranked Class AAA team in West Virginia, got the best of second-ranked and previously-unbeaten Hedgesville on Friday night, 63-48, in front of a massive crowd at Hedgesville.

Martinsburg, now 8-0, had a big second quarter in which it outscored Hedgesville 25-13. Senior David Long scored all eight of his points in the quarter and Jalen Lewis added five.

With a 39-22 lead at the half, Martinsburg never trailed although Hedgesville crept to within six points later in the game.

Donte Grantham had a double-double for the Bulldogs with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lewis added 16 points, four assists and three steals and Denzel Cole had four assists.

Chris Shields led Hedgesville (9-1) with 21 points as the Eagles, allowing only 33 points per game defensively, were more than doubled by the Bulldogs.

Martinsburg, which hits the road tonight at 7 at Saint James, will host Hedgesville on Feb. 1.

South Hagerstown 80, Brunswick 40

Che Swayne scored 12 of his team-high 16 points from beyond the arc to lead South Hagerstown in an MVAL Antietam rout of Brunswick.

South Hagerstown pulled away from Brunswick with a 21-10 second quarter and extended its lead with a 25-8 run in the third quarter.

Devon King had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, Xavier Freeman had 13 points and nine assists and Devon Redmon had 10 points for the Rebels (8-3, 5-1).

Zach Hossler hit four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points for the Railroaders (7-4, 4-2).

BALTIMORE — Martin Geben scored a game-high 28 points and had 10 rebounds for St. Maria Goretti in a Baltimore Catholic League loss to Mount St. Joseph (17-3, 5-2).

Ryan Grant had seven assists and Isaiah Harris-Winn had nine points and four rebounds for the the Gaels (11-7, 2-4).

Cobi King had 14 points and Matt Stevens had nine rebounds for the Leopards (5-7, 3-3), who hit seven 3-pointers and combined on 14 overall with the Cougars (0-10, 0-7).

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. — Nick Smartt scored 21 points — all from 3-point range — as Southern Fulton turned up the intensity in the second half to pull away from McConnellsburg in a Sideling Hill League game.

The Indians (4-3, 3-3) led 33-26 at halftime, but held the Spartans (2-6, 0-4) to just eight second-half points to get the win.

Jordan Clingerman had 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Southern Fulton, while Alex Seburn added 12 points and Brayden Mellott grabbed five rebounds.

Tyler Green had 20 points for McConnellsburg.

McLEAN, Va. — Nnamdi Enechionyia scored 12 points, but none were bigger than the last two as he put in a missed shot at the buzzer that gave Saint James a win over Potomac School on Thursday.

Obi Enechionyia had 21 points, 17 rebounds, six blocks and two assists for the Saints (6-7, 1-1) in the Mid-Atlantic conference win. A.J. Carr also had 10 points for Saint James.
