Kayla Ewing went 6-for-8 on the day as Hagerstown Community College opened its season with a doubleheader split against Alfred State.

Ewing was 4-for-4 in the first game as the Hawks rapped out 20 hits. Shayla Murray and Candace Horchner both went 3-for-4, while Morgan Purdham picked up the win.

Ewing went 2-for-4 in the second game, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Hawks tried to rally from a 6-3 deficit. Sarah Mullin went 3-for-4 and Hayley Thorn added two hits for the Hawks (1-1).

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Elisa Orlandi homered and Savannah Snyder hit a two-run shot to lead Shepherd University to a win in the nightcap and a split of a doubleheader with Bloomsburg.

Horning places 8th at nationals

LUBBOCK, Texas — Hagerstown Community College sophomore Brandon Horning placed eighth in the men’s 1,000-meter run Saturday at the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Texas Tech University.

Horning, a South Hagerstown graduate, achieved a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 33.43 seconds.
