COLLEGE BASEBALL
Garrett Sprankle’s one-out single in the bottom of the eighth innning scored Tyler Walter to lift Hagerstown Community College to an 8-7 win over Alfred State in the second game of a doubleheader sweep on Sunday.
Walter drew a leadoff walk and stole second before moving to third on a groundout. Sprankle followed with his base hit to give HCC (5-1) its second straight sweep.
Sprankle finished with two hits and two RBIs, C.J. Owings had two hits and an RBI and Eric Schanzenbacher added two hits for the Hawks. Dylan Eyler (3-0) picked up the win with one inning of scoreless relief.
HCC survived a seventh-inning rally by Alfred State to win the first game, 12-11. Dylan Dunn had three hits and two RBIs, Walter had two hits and four RBIs and Devin Schaeffer drove in a pair of runs.
Walter (1-0) earned the victory and Cooper Ayres got his first save as he shut the door on Alfred State’s five-run seventh.

Hagerstown Community College pounded out 40 hits on the day in a doubleheader sweep of Alfred State.
Sarah Mullin and Morgan Purdham each drove in two runs in the Hawks’ seven-run first inning in the first game. Purdham finished with three RBIs, while Mullin and Hayley Thorn each went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Mullin (1-1) got the win, scattering five hits and striking out two in five innings.
In the second game, HCC (3-1) had 23 hits but still needed an extra inning to complete the sweep.
Mullin and Shayla Murray each had four hits, Thorn and Candace Horchner each had three hits and Purdham — who picked up the win — smacked a three-run homer for the Hawks.

Sprecher makes all-tourney team
FREDERICK, Md. — Hagerstown Community College sophomore Katie Sprecher was named to the Region XX Division II all-tournament team following Sunday’s championship game at Frederick Community College.
HCC’s lost to eventual champion Chesapeake in the semifinals Saturday.
Chesapeake beat Dundalk 85-76 in the final to advance to the national tournament.
