VERO BEACH, Fla. — Hagerstown extended its winning streak to seven straight games with a pair of victories Friday — a come-from-behind 12-6 victory over Penn State-Fayette, followed by a 14-1 rout of Rochester College.
In the win over Penn State-Fayette, Hagerstown was held scoreless through three innings before overcoming a six-run deficit.
The rally started in the bottom of the fourth with Hagerstown plating its first two runs of the game to cut the deficit to 6-2. The momentum carried over to the fifth inning as the Hawks exploded with six runs in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead.
Tyler Walter had two hits and four RBIs, Garrett Sprankle had two hits and two RBIs, Eric Schanzenbacher had two hits and Dylan Dunn had two hits and an RBI for Hagerstown.
In the win over Rochester College, Jordan Nicewarner had two hits and three RBIs, Tyler Walter had two hits and an RBI, Sprankle had two hits and Tanner Partlow pitched a complete-game 3-hitter with four strikeouts and allowed no earned runs to pick up the win for the Hawks (8-1).
Goretti 19, Chapelgate 5
COLUMBIA, Md. — Matt Casto started off the season with six goals and two assists as St. Maria Goretti rolled to a win in its opener Friday.
Mike Ewing had four goals and three assists and John Martin also scored four times for the Gaels. Wyatt Derr had a pair of goals and three assists and Jordan Patterson, Jake Kline and Will Snyder each tallied a goal. Mike Fairley recorded 12 saves in net.
Martinsburg 88, Elkins 56
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Jalen Lewis hit five 3-pointers on the way to 22 points, and Martinsburg used its high-powered offense to roll past Elkins in Thursday night’s West Virginia Class AAA Region II co-final.
Donte’ Grantham had 20 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks for the Bulldogs (23-2), in the process scoring his 1,000th career point. Jordan Robinson had 17 points, six rebounds and five steals, Jarrell Jones scored 11 points and Lewis rounded out his night with six assists and four steals.
Martinsburg was red-hot from the opening tip, finishing the first quarter with a 26-15 lead. The Bulldogs kept pulling away, outscoring Elkins 43-24 in the second half.
Logan Phillips led all scorers with 23 points for Elkins.
The state tournament begins Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center.
